Mr Sensible Posted 26 August 2015 Report Share Posted 26 August 2015 This. Top six is nowhere. Celebrating mediocrity. To see Dundee win a major cup would be a first for the majority of our support, so to say it doesn't matter is utterly baffling. Cobra Posted 26 August 2015 Report Share Posted 26 August 2015 When I wis a bairn every year I bought " The Wee Red Book ".and I used to study it from cover to cover.and the most important references to me as barn was every teams league wins, scottish cup wins and league cup wins.... tae a bairn that wis all that mattered, that wis our history.Finishing position never mattered cos it wis forgotten about after a couple o' years. I vaguely remember the wee red book. Agree that league placing is quickly forgotten. Dundee have been runners-up to the Scottish champions four times. United have never finished second. I doubt many folk know or care about that stat.

Garry Posted 26 August 2015 Author Report Share Posted 26 August 2015 Best time I've had as a Dee was Perugia trip due to euro qualification through Scottish cup. I've loved the Derby wins, Scottish and League cup finals. Maybe if we got the better of Rangers or Aberdeen in the finals I've seen I'd have a different opinion. Anyway, onwards and upwards with Hartley.
JoeCovenant Posted 26 August 2015 Report Share Posted 26 August 2015 Joe, I think you might have misread my comment. I said the cup is the most important thing for me. I've never seen us lift a major trophy so it's massive for me. Wow! Apologies Cobra.... I did indeed read "isn't the most important thing".... Sorry, bud. steven dee Posted 26 August 2015 Report Share Posted 26 August 2015 Iv never seen Dundee win a major trophy so if I was offered a cup win but it meant finishing bottom 6 for the next 10 years I'd be more than happy to accept that.

deefly78 Posted 27 August 2015 Report Share Posted 27 August 2015 We will be lucky to win an egg cup defending the way we have been. I would be happy with winning the league cup for starters but if we can't beat division 1 teams what hope do we have. A good kick up the ar*see is needed to all involved with the team including manager etc
blythswood Posted 27 August 2015 Report Share Posted 27 August 2015 Top 6 is an arbitrary split made up by the SPFL, it's certainly no measure of success. The Europa League is now a competition very few teams want to be in, Thursday night games and nightmare journeys. The Cups are where it's at for us. The League Cup in particular is a great opportunity, seeded as well, but yet again we somehow find a way to implode.

Sadly, because the SPFL have decided upon that split, and because prize money (and indeed gate money) is affected due to that split, then it IS seen as a measure of success. In no way denying it's a ridiculous state of affairs, but it's wrong to say it's not a 'measure' of success - that measurement is easily made in the additional income after the split. Attilio Posted 27 August 2015 Report Share Posted 27 August 2015 During the last few years we had in the 1st Division, our goals amongst the fans seemed to be, Premier League, Premier League survival and then Top 6. Maybe I was wrong? Top 6 certainly seemed to be a goal and something to be attained. On the basis that we achieved Top 6, I would think it would be safe to assume that remaining in that top 6 and also having decent runs in the cups would be the next level. Unfortunately, for some folks the dividing line between having a decent cup run and actually winning a cup is just one sentence. Like anything else you need a decent amount of luck along the way imo.
