League Preview: St Johnstone

Neil McCann and his players will have had a lot of time between last week’s defeat, and the game against St Johnstone to reflect on the performance and humiliating result against McCall’s Ayr United.

I will not take anything away from Ayr United, they rightly deserved credit for their win and I sincerely wish them well for the remainder of the Betfred Cup. Dundee’s former target Shankland scored twice, and did what our strikers have been failing to do for some time, he took his chances when they came.

St Johnstone

The Dark Blues travel west to face our Tayside neighbours St Johnstone on Saturday for the Perthshire men’s Derby.  Both teams have failed to pick up a win in their first two league games and each side will see this as a chance to get those first vital three points.

St Johnstone travelled to Palmerston last weekend, coming away with a 4-2 victory which as earned them a home draw in the quarter final against Celtic next September. Tony Watt who had previously been training with Dundee found the net twice, along with Wright and Hendry.

It was Tony Watt who also helped St Johnstone secure their first point in the 1 – 1 draw against a very good Hibernian side in their second league game. St Johnstone have scored 5 goals in their last two matches and it is safe to say they have found their shooting boots. I unfortunately cannot say the same for Dundee.

Dundee

In contrast, Neil McCann’s men have only found the net once in the last three league encounters and that was in our first league game against St Mirren. Elton NGWATALA with a left footed shot from outside the box, into the right hand corner former Dee Samson goal, leaving him standing on the line.

This was a game in which Dundee dominated but failed to take their chances, including a Moussa penalty which Samson easily saved.

When Dundee travel to Perth, the team will be without the services of Sofien Moussa (who was sent off for a second bookable offence) and Genseric Kusunga (Shown a straight red card).

The good news is that Glen Kamara should be back in the side, after missing most of the start of the season through an ankle injury. The sending off by Kusunga at the weekend, will most likely pave a return for Steven Caulker. His absence from the team has mystified the Dundee support, with rising speculation that there could have been a fallout between the big English Defender and the manager.
