  • Antonio Portales Poised For Breakthrough With Mexico National Team

Dundee FC defender Antonio Portales is on the brink of a career-defining moment as he closes in on his first-ever call-up to the Mexican national team.

The 28-year-old has been turning heads with his outstanding performances this season, making him the top-scoring Mexican in European football with three goals in the Premier Sports Cup.

The Mexican Football Federation has reportedly reached out to Portales to check his availability for upcoming international fixtures, signalling that a debut for El Tri could be on the horizon.

Dundee FC manager Tony Docherty couldn’t hide his excitement at the prospect. “I just heard that before I came in, and I'm absolutely thrilled with that news," Docherty said.

"I couldn't be happier for him because he's been an absolute credit. He's a fantastic professional, and his level of performances has been outstanding.”

Docherty was quick to acknowledge the challenges Portales has faced since moving to Scotland.

“You have to remember the challenges he faced, like the difference in climate and culture. It can be difficult for a player, but Antonio has been the consummate professional. It doesn't surprise me that he's hoping to gain international recognition because his performance level and consistency have been fantastic. But for me, the professionalism he shows daily is exceptional. No one deserves that call-up more than Antonio, and I'd be absolutely thrilled if it's confirmed that he gets it."

Portales has been a standout for the Dark Blues this season, and his potential call-up is a testament to his hard work and dedication since joining the Dee last season.

The Mexican national team, currently under the leadership of Javier Aguirre, is undergoing a rebuild after a disappointing Copa America campaign.

Aguirre, with vast experience managing top clubs and national teams such as Atletico Madrid, Espanyol, Japan and Egypt, is looking to introduce fresh talent, and Portales appears to be firmly in his plans.

As Aguirre prepares for two friendlies in the United States against New Zealand and Canada, the Dundee defender is expected to be among the new faces in the squad, with the final list set to be announced later this week.

Portales, who has previously played for his homeland clubs Atlético de San Luis, Alebrijes de Oaxaca, and Atlante in Mexico, has always dreamed of representing his country on the international stage. With the backing of his manager and club, that dream now seems closer than ever.

Javier Aguirre’s recent statement, "Any Mexican player performing well, regardless of where they play, will have a chance in my team," bodes well for Portales, whose consistent performances and professionalism have earned him plaudits from the fans.
