The long wait was over for 100 young Dundee fans who eventually made it on the hallowed turf of Dens Park to play against their idols.
After the club and main club sponsors McEwan Fraser Legal teamed up to host the Biggest Home Game event to coincide with the launch of the new Dundee away kit, the first one-hundred children who purchased the full junior kit were awarded a golden ticket and the opportunity to take on the Dundee first team.
What this resulted in was many young fans being able to live the dream of playing on the Dens Park pitch and running out deserved winners with a 5-2 victory.
Spurred on by hundreds of parents watching from the South Enclosure, the likes of Darren O’Dea, Paul McGowen and new boy Scott Allan were unable to stop the juggernaut of players in the red and black.
Not only will the young heroes be proud of the victory, they can go back and tell all their friends that they just inflicted Dundee’s first defeat of pre-season!
“It was the senior guys’ first defeat of the pre-season but I’m hoping they’ll learn from it,” declared Neil McCann.
“But I’m just delighted for my young team. I set them out to attack as a 99. I went for a 33-33-33 formation, and I think it worked a treat.
“We attacked in numbers and defended in numbers. You can’t ask any more than that,” joked the manager.
There’s no doubting that since taking over as the main sponsors of Dundee, McEwan Fraser Legal have done a fantastic job advertising the Dundee name.
From free tickets, chances to win hospitality to the Biggest Home Game, they have really engaged with the supporters over social media.
It’s a rarity to see this from a sponsor and it should be applauded the amount of work they put in to go the extra mile with the Dundee supporters.
Spokesperson for McEwan Fraser Legal said: "It was undoubtedly Dundee's biggest home game, and we are delighted that everyone had such a brilliant day.
"The kids can be proud of their performance, and everyone at McEwan Fraser Legal is delighted we were able to set up this opportunity.
"We reckon the Neil McCann will have had his eye on one or two starlets too, so maybe there's a Dens Park star of the future who's just made their first steps into the big time!"
Long may we see opportunities like yesterday occur more often.
All of us at The Dark Blues website and Up Wi’ The Bonnets look forward to helping out in the future, even if it’s just a retweet here and there.
