  1. The talk before the match was all about returning hero Kane Hemmings, who found himself put straight into the starting XI but this meant Andrew Nelson was the unlucky forward to drop to the bench with Danny Johnson favoured to partner Hemmings up top. With the match still at 0-0 and Dundee struggling to find a way to break down a stubborn Ayr back-line, McPake replaced Johnson with Nelson and the substitute only took six minute to put the Dee ahead with a glancing header from a pin-point Jordan Marshall cross. McPake said: “Andy probably feels hard done by. “I had a front two that didn’t include him and that's no reflection on Andy who's had a good pre-season. “It was a tough decision to leave him out but that's football for you. “But I really love working with Andy. You get everything from him and he showed that again for how long he was on the park here. “His goal was great, a brilliant header. There’s so much more to come from him. We know he can make a massive contribution with goals allied to his overall play. “We’re just delighted to get off the mark. It was a tough, tough game. Ayr are a very dangerous side. “We’re going to need this grit and determination. We’re going to have a lot of teams coming to Dens and trying to frustrate us, and I felt we handled that well.”
  2. Lawrence Shankland opened the scoring after the Dundee defence were unable to clear their lines from an Ayr United goal kick. Substitute Sofien Moussa was then sent off after a second bookable offence following a 15 minute cameo and the opposition took full advantage of this when Shankland added a second. Our misery was further compounded when Moffat got in on the act to smack home a third in a day to forget for everyone associated with Dundee "The result flattered us," said McCann. "It’s Difficult to put my finger on it. It’s not often in management or playing in football that so many things are wrong in one game. Poor passing, poor application, we looked flat and everyone was waiting for someone else to step up for us." "The thing is we’ve played really well in the league and not taken chances, and the puzzling thing is we’ve prepared well and had a game plan. "We come out and put on such a weak perforce and it’s a sore one. It happened against Dunfermline as well so that tells me it’s a mindset thing. "I’m very angry about Moussa’s red, we had a word with him when it kept happening, and we can’t afford for things like that to happen. "Then Genseric has lost all his composure, he’s obviously hurting but it doesn’t help anything. The whole team and myself let the club down today, we should have enough, like we showed against Aberdeen last week and we didn’t show any of it today. And it hurts because we’re out the cup now. "That is not acceptable and I have to apologise to the supporters."
