A few days away from it being 53 years since we locked horns with Real Zaragoza in the UEFA Cup Winners Cup at Dens Park, there is no better time to have a look back at the matchday programme from that very tie. There’s not many pages to look at, eight in total, so let me try and give you a little bit more information about this tie. Dundee gained entry to the 1964-65 Cup Winner Cup despite being beaten by Rangers in the Scottish Cup the previous season due to the Glasgow club winning the League title. The team were also giving a bye from the first round along with old enemies, Sporting Lisbon. In the second round, we would be paired up with Spanish side Real Zaragoza. Zaragoza had the season before won the Inter Cities Fairs Cup with a 2-1 victory over fellow Spaniards Valencia at the Nou Camp. They also finished fourth in the La Liga behind winners Real Madrid, Barcelona and Real Betis. Their first tie in the Cup Winners Cup seen a resounding 8-1 aggregate score Malta side, Valletta. A 3-0 win in Malta was followed by a 5-1 thumping at the La Romareda. So Real Zaragoza rolled into Dundee on the 18th November 1964 to take on Dundee at Dens Park with no fewer than SIX internationals in their team: Severino Reija, Jose Cuellar (Pepin), Santos, Marcelino, Juan Manuel Villa and Carlos Laperta. Dundee would be missing their lethal marksman Alan Gilzean even though the striker had just signed a two-month deal in October after he had initially refused to sign a new contract in the summer that year. Back then many moons before the Bosman ruling, Gilzeans refusal to pen a new deal meant he couldn’t not only play for Dundee but also he wasn’t allowed to sign for another team unless the club agreed a fee to sell him. The deadline for signing players to play in Europe was on August 15th and despite last minute appeals, it would prove to be fruitless and Dundee would have to do without their star-man. In front of 21,000 fans and our first European tie since our 1-0 victory over AC Milan in the European Cup Semi-Final, Dundee were back in Europe. Donaldson, Hamilton, Cox, Cousin, Beattie, Stuart, Penman, Murray, Waddell, Houston and Robertson lined up that evening and the team started brightly when Steve Murray headed the Dee into an early lead but two goals in three minutes from Santos and Villa put the Spanish side ahead. It would take a last-minute goal from Doug Houston to level things and the tie would end two-a-piece. In the return tie, Roque Olsen’s side would beat Dundee 2-1 to go through to the next round 4-3 on aggregate. Hugh Robertson would give us an early lead but just like in the first leg, two quick goals this time from Laperta would give Zaragoza the win. Real would make it to the Semi-Finals after defeating Cardiff City 3-2 over two ties in the next round. They would not make it past that stage though, being beaten to eventual winners West Ham.

Ross County 1 - 3 Dundee: Rory Loy double sinks the staggies.
TheDarkBlues posted a match report in Season 2016/17
A Rory Loy double, one from the penalty spot, gave the visitors a two-goal cushion at the break. Paul McGowan added a third just after the hour mark before County substitute Craig Curran netted what proved to be a consolation five minutes later. The first real effort on goal came in the ninth minute when good work down the left by James McEveley set up Brian Graham but the forward failed to get his shot away first time and the ball was cleared. The opener came at the other end when Mark O'Hara got to the byline and his cut back was swept into the net at the near post by Loy. County had claims for a penalty turned down a minute later when Alex Schalk went down in the box under pressure from Darren O'Dea but referee Bobby Madden saw nothing amiss Graham then fired one over the crossbar from 15 yards after he connected with a McEveley delivery. Ian McShane replaced the injured Martin Woods in the 26th minute and with his first touch he fired over after being set up by Schalk. Liam Boyce let fly a minute later but his shot was also too high. Dundee continued to look a threat going forward and Loy was not far away to doubling his side's lead in the 34th minute with a low drive which flew just past Scott Fox's right-hand post. The visitors were awarded a rather soft penalty in the 41st minute when O'Hara appeared to be pushed by McEveley from Michael Duffy's corner. Loy drove the spot kick right down the middle as Fox dived to his right. It was all County from the start of the second half but Dundee soaked up the pressure and countered to devastating effect in the 62nd minute. Duffy latched on to a through ball from Loy and he squared it for McGowan to drill the ball under Fox and into the net. It looked all over but County almost pulled one back when Gardyne forced a fine save from Dundee keeper Scott Bain. From the resultant 67th-minute corner Boyce's shot got the slightest of touches from Curran on its way into the bottom corner. But there was to be no dramatic comeback as Dundee saw out the game comfortably to start the season with three points.-

Hamilton 0 - 1 Dundee: Paul McGowan came back to haunt his old club
TheDarkBlues posted a match report in Season 2016/17
McGowan, who was on loan at New Douglas Park in his Celtic days struck on 61 minutes, driving a Kevin Holt cross past Gary Woods from 12 yards. It was no more than the Dark Blues deserved, in a game they dominated. The win also pulls Dundee to within a point of second-bottom Ross County. It was a first defeat in five for Accies. Hamilton started really well and in the opening 40 seconds Grant Gillespie picked out Eamonn Brophy inside the box. The striker appeared to be pulled down but the ball broke to Ali Crawford, who fired over from just outside the box. Dundee then took a grip of the game and were perhaps unfortunate not to be ahead at the interval. After five minutes Tom Hateley's corner from the right was met with an angled header by Julen Etxabeguren, which flashed just past the right post corner. A minute later Kostadin Gadzhalov timed his run perfectly to clear after Crawford had sent Brophy through. Dundee had another promising chance after 18 minutes when Craig Wighton broke down the left but he slipped his shot just past the near post. A minute later the home side had a chance. Alex D'Acol's throw-in from the left was knocked on for Greg Docherty, but he sent a dipping shot bouncing just past the left post. The hosts then created their best move of the game, but D'col sent a shot just over the top right corner from 20 yards. Dundee could have taken the lead after 26 minutes. Wighton broke down the left and created a chance for Marcus Haber who could only flick his shot past the right post as he slid in. Hamilton had another half-chance as the first half came to a close, but Crawford fired over from just outside the box from a Brophy knock-down. After 59 minutes Docherty broke free on the right and delivered a deep cross that was well headed by Imrie, but cleared for a corner. Two minutes later McGowan got on the end of Holt's cross 12 yards out to give the visitors the lead. It became scrappy after the goal with a lot of Accies moves ending with referee Stephen Finnie's whistle as their frustration mounted. Dundee nearly put the result beyond doubt after 82 minutes when Holt went on a terrific run down the left and squared for Hateley, but his shot was well blocked by Lennard Sowah. Reaction Dundee manager Paul Hartley: "We have been on a bad run. I can only applaud the players, they were superb in every department. "Hamilton didn't really threaten us at all and we deserve that win. We were the better team. "We had some good meetings during the week and I explained a few things to them. We were all honest about what we needed to do better and we're going to fix it together - fight in every game now." Hamilton player-manager Martin Canning: "It was always going to be a stuffy game. "Over the piece, did we deserve to win the game? Definitely not. Did we deserve to lose the game? Probably not either but that's football for you. "We've lost and we need to lick our wounds and go again next week." -

Scottish League Champions 1961/62: St Johnstone 0-3 Dundee
UWTB1893 posted a blog entry in The Dark Blues Blogs
“Oh, there’s Robertson, Penman and Alan Gilzean, “With Cousin and Smith they're the finest you've seen, “A defence that is steady, heroic and sure, “Liney, Hamilton, Cox, Seith and Wishart and Ure.” Hector Nicol’s song ‘Up Wi’ The Bonnets’ pays homage to the great Dundee side who became the Champions of Scotland for the first and only time on the last day of the of 1961/1962 season. Thanks to the wonders of modern technology, you can now read the matchday programme in full along with a few extra pages from that night’s Sporting Post. The programme includes notes and comments, the team line-ups, that days fixtures and a hell of a lot of advertisements. Who cares about adverts though? It’s the programme from the day we won the league! Most present-day Dundee supporters weren’t lucky enough to see the side in action that Bob Crampsie described as the best footballing team that Scotland ever produced but that doesn’t stop fans of all ages celebrating them as heroes to this day. We are reminded of these players and their accomplishments on a regular basis and rightly so. For the fans that were there to witness this marvellous event, a mere mention of this will bring a wry smile along with the words, “I was there.” Saturday, 28th April 1962 was the day when Dundee stood at the top of Scottish football. We were the best team in the county and about to clinch our greatest-ever achievement. With the sun shining down on Muirton Park, over 20,000 Dundee supporters would make the short trip to Perth as they hoped to see to the coronation of the new kings of Scotland. Dundee went into the match needing only a point to clinch their first title. A dramatic midweek had seen them beat St Mirren at home while closest challengers Rangers stumbled to a 1-0 defeat against Aberdeen. St Johnstone also needed a point, but to stave off relegation. Ian Ure recalled in his book, Ure’s Truly, that: “A message was passed to the players that they could collect £50 each if thy made it a draw. The idea was treated with contempt and only served to double our determination.” Dundee had previously lost the League Championship on the last day of the 1948/49 season with defeat away to Falkirk but there would be no similar heartbreak for players and supporters this time around. The Gods were smiling on the Dark Blues and the team grabbed their shot at glory with both hands, an emphatic 3-0 win (Gilzean 2, Penman) sealing the title. When the final whistle went, the team were mobbed by wave after wave of Dundee supporters as their joy at seeing The Dee finally winning the top prize was too much for them to remain in the terraces. The heroes were lost among the thousands who swarmed the turf before being hoisted upon the shoulders of delirious fans. Some players attempted to make their way up to the directors’ box only to be swallowed up by jubilant Dees in the Muirton stand. For the 6,000 or so St Johnstone fans in attendance, the sight of Dundee fans holding a party on their own patch compounded their misery. They sat 5th bottom of the league at kick off time, only to find themselves relegated to the Second Division on goal average (this being before the introduction of goal difference) 90 minutes later. The celebrations continued through the night and beyond for everyone of a Dark Blue persuasion. Thousands lined the streets of Dundee to welcome the team bus home and cheer them as manager Bob Shankly, captain Bobby Cox and the rest of the immortals acknowledged the huge support from the balcony of City Chambers. That night’s Sporting Post headline was one of the simplest in the illustrious history of that publication but ‘It’s Dundee’s League’ said all that you needed to know and remains a joy to read nearly six decades on. Goalkeeper Pat Liney later admitted that no one at the club expected to be challenging for the title that year. “I remember it like it was yesterday especially as our triumph was so unexpected,” he said. “If you had said to me at the start of the season that we would be top four or five then we would have settled for that. “We started the season not expected to win the League and we also did not do too well in the League Cup sections that opened the season. There was no big thing that just happened, we clicked together and with Rangers two points behind, we ended up at St Johnstone needing a point to win the League. The team were a close-knit unit with seven of them living in one big house in Roseangle, a vital factor in Dundee’s success, according to Pat. “We lived together, played football together, went to the dancing together and became great friends together,” he recalled. More importantly, they became Champions together and, for that, we Dundee fans will forever be grateful.- 1 comment
