islaydarkblue Posted 28 February 2017 Posted 28 February 2017 Shortly before Christmas I collected the exclusive prize which I had won in the Dee Promotions Lottery. I had arranged to collect it at the reception desk at Dens but as it was a whisky glass they could not get it through the gap below the window of the reception desk. The glass door was opened which took me into the "hallowed" part of the Main Entrance at Dens. Whilst there I picked up a leaflet from a leaflet stand about Funeral Buffets in the lounges at Dens Park. There are three menus ranging from £5.95 to £7.95 per person including an unlimited supply of tea and coffee. A week past yesterday (Monday) I phoned the club and spoke to a female member of the Commercial Department. I told her that I was unaware that the club did funeral buffets at Dens and the first time I knew the cost was when I picked up the leaflet in the hall way behind the main reception desk at Dens. She advised me that leaflets were in every funeral undertakers in Dundee. There is a mention in the Commercial section of the club website but no details of the menus available.http://dundeefc.co.uk/commercial/conference-banqueting-and-events/ My questions to my fellow posters are. 1. Are you aware that the club did funeral teas at Dens. 2. Did you know the choice of menus and cost per person. 3. Have anybody picked up one of these Funeral Buffet (Teas) leaflets. 4. If anybody has sadly been involved in arranging a funeral has the undertaker suggested having the funeral tea in one of the lounges at Dens Park. The usual places to have funeral teas in Dundee are Invercarse Hotel, Park Hotel, Double Tree Hotel (Swallow), Queens Hotel, Birkie Inn and the Woodlands Hotel. In my opinion the club are missing a big opportunity to promote Dens Park as a place for funeral teas. There is plenty of free parking.
Boba Fett Posted 28 February 2017 Posted 28 February 2017 No.. I wasn't aware and have never seen the flyers Islay. I don't imagine it would be a game changing money spinner but some more promotion and awareness of Dens as a potential venue can do no harm. As Tesco say. Every little helps. Especially when our owners are plugging financial gaps. 1

We could always get Arab fans in for this, they're a dying club right now 4
Popular Post WoodStein Posted 28 February 2017 Popular Post Posted 28 February 2017 The only funeral party I've attended in recent years was, coincidentally, at Dens (2nd May 2016)....it was well attended (10,088), menu was good value for money (£25), and the deceased was laid to rest with great ceremony, though a few of the mourners were visibly moved to tears. But to be serious....the elderly father-in-law of an old friend is not expected to see out the next week or two, and likely to only have a handful of relatives & former neighbours attending the Crematorium service. Last time I was in his house (5+ years ago), I'm certain I was talking to him about an old team photo of the Dee on his wall. I'll mention Dens to his daughter, she might think it would be an appropriate venue. 17

If the club put leaflets in the club shop and advertise details of Funeral Teas at Dens Park in the match day programme and club website then they might get a bit more business. Organising a funeral is a harrowing job and people tend to use the usual "haunts" for the wake. St Johnstone FC are a top 6 club thanks to the use of their hospitality lounges for funeral teas. I have given my wife strict instructions that my wake will be at Dens Park (or whatever ground Dundee FC are using). I asked the lady from the Commercial Department about the scattering of my ashes and she replied that they have an area set aside for the scattering of ashes at Dens.
barkblue Posted 1 March 2017 Posted 1 March 2017 Obviously this couldn't hurt and could bring in a small amount of incremental business to the club, which would only be a good thing. What Dens doesn't have over the club that does do this successfully (St Johnstone - although the current road changes and new builds in the A9/McDairmid/Cremmy area may scupper that, but we'll see) is location. They capture a lot more than StJ fans purely by being next door to the facility itself. Every idea is a decent idea and if the club are offering a service, then there's no point in no one knowing about it. However, personally, I think it is a far distance from being a money spinner and would think that any potential new football facility would offer far greater scope in this direction (and beyond). On a personal note, I'm an out of town Dee and think we have a fair proportion in that boat now, so you count that part of the market out too.
Derry Drummer Posted 1 March 2017 Posted 1 March 2017 Out of curiosity, the people saying its not a move spinner. Have any of you any idea what you make off an average small funeral?
Attilio Posted 1 March 2017 Posted 1 March 2017 I understand that the funeral/crem potential business is also being investigated by the club. As has been said, St J benefit from being right next door to this kind of facility.
Prince Buster Posted 1 March 2017 Posted 1 March 2017 Funeral teas are probably a very good potential source of income however any funeral wake I've ever been at there's at least been a bar that's been open well past the funeral tea's allotted time. I somehow think that the deal at Dens will be a slot of x hours then you have to be out. After all the place is only open during office hours outside of match days. I'm no expert but would imagine any notion that a funeral wake could be a money spinner would be tied to the sale of alcohol for an extended period to a captive customer base? Otherwise £7.95 per head for say 50 people is £397.50 which will just about cover overheads for a place like Dens. Alcohol sales for one and a half / two hours might make some profit but nobody really drinks for that first 45 minutes to an hour do they? I could see the local pubs being very happy if this too off big time at Dens as people spill out and head for Whitey's, Ambassador, Barrels, Bowbridge etc. The idea that St. Johnstone are top six because they host funeral teas nearly made me spit my muesli over my laptop. How does Dens cover their licensing requirement to have a qualified doorman at every event held in the lounges? Are funeral teas exempt from this?

If I was planning a new facility at the location being espoused by all and sundry as that of our new stadium (as an example) I think I'd most certainly be looking to exploit its relative proximity to the crematorium and would be offering this service in a very structured way to a potentially huge customer base.

Yep. Just good business sense. Shame that the crem isn't a wee bit nearer to the location.
