Brace Yourself

We've spoken about how we should set up for Saturday but I think it's worth bracing ourselves for Accies' approach. And I'm not meaning formation etc.

This is a team with a tiny budget, no wins on grass all season and at least two key players out. It's also a team who know if they win their home games they'll be fine and have to compensate for their tiny budget in any way they can.

Expect niggly fouls, time wasting throughout and general ugliness that will wind our fans up no end. The players have to be ready for this. I don't actually have a problem with it tbh, if you can't afford  the players other teams can then you have to make amends in other ways.

First goal is crucial.

This is massively important. We've played 14 games since Christmas. There has been at least one first-half goal in every game and the half-time result has been the same as the final result in 13 of the 14 games (the ridiculous game at Inverness where we conceded two penalties being the exception). In nine of the 14 games the opening goal has been scored by the 17th minute so the outcome in our games is often being decided very early on and by the opening goal.

I hope - for a change - whoever the ref is, he is paying attention to all the niggly pushes in the back, jersey-tugging & general obstruction that happens just before a ball arrives at the feet, chest or head of one of our players. There's no need for the officials to be watching the flight of the ball, they ought to have learned by now (& been coached in this by ex-players) to watch the players where the ball is heading. There are half a dozen sides who do this constantly & always seem to get away with it.

For reasons that escape me, we never seem to be able to do this & get away with it. It's the ages-old 'too honest' / 'too nice' / 'too soft' label that seems attached to our sides over a number of years.

If we don't score first, I have doubts that we currently have the spirit within the squad to recover further than a draw. I'd like to be proved wrong.

It's John Beaton. 10 days after his Dingwall nightmare we get him again.
