What Has McCann Changed

Recommended Posts

I think he has really only made 2 or 3 tactical changes

Gomis-obviously decided Gomis has played at a high standard and must play.Very good again on Saturday. Bringing the ball out of defence in the first half.

McGowan-he has moved him out of the deep midfield role to play further forward.I guess he knows McGowan is a good man to have in the team but very limited in passing and tackling hence he does not have to do as much of that.Pity he can't teach him to shoot-he had a couple of good shooting opportunities just outside the box but could not do it.

Hately-as with Gomis decided Hately must play. With McGowan out of midfield and Hately in there a much better range of passes coming through.A terrific reverse pass lon Saturday to O Hara.

Pretty simple but it has worked.

He's not really done anything other than bring fresh enthusiasm which has likely increased morale. No criticism of him - it's worked and clearly he's brought what the dressing room needed. I just wonder if any new manager could have come in and had the same effect? Think it's indicative that Hartleys confidence was shot and that passed on through to the players.

Hartley seems to be derided by some on here for "taking Bombers team over the line" will be interesting to see if McCann is subject to the same rhetoric should he secure our survival. The proof of the pudding will be if he stays on next season and has to make signings to improve the team. I don't know how much Terry knows or has seen of  our lower leagues but that is the market we operate in for the most part so could be an area where he might struggle.

I'd personally be looking to cherry pick from ICT if/when they go down - whisper it, but Billy McKay off Haber sounds decent to me with Meekings shoring up centre half while Draper rag dolls boys in the middle of the park. It's never wise to take to many from a relegated team but Meekings and Draper have that physicality we need and although a likely double relegation ex DAB McKay has continued to score at a decent rate in truly awful sides...

@Bubster I agree with you about McKay. He's a player that I think would score goals with someone like Haber beside him. I thought in last years 2-1 January Derby win, he was United's main threat, getting into great positions. They gave him zero support though.

Still an ex DAB mind you.

It's a new manager bounce. Players have been offered a clean slate and they feel liberated.

McCann has used his common sense and offered a lot of praise and optimism to a group of players with no confidence and it's worked wonders. Hartley's words of encouragement had ceased to be effective because he was part of the slump.

Very good points mate. I agree those first 2 points are what stand out for me tactically. Coupled with the injection of confidence.

Nothing to whisper about there. The guy was one of the leagues top scorers in his original spell at Inverness and has spent a couple of seasons playing for really atrociously bad teams who have played him the wrong way. He's only 28 and has a relatively clean injury past. Nothing to say that somebody could get those goals out of him again and he's exactly the sort of signing that St Johnstone make who may not be flavour of the month (but has some sort of past) but turns out to do really well (pretty much describes their whole squad almost).

Meekings could be great but don't know what his physical state is right now. Think Draper would be a very solid signing too but get a feeling he'll either stay in the Highlands (maybe even being a turncoat and heading to Ross County) so he doesn't need to relocate or head to League One in England for a solid wage if he does move on. Worth asking the question.

I'd want Billy McKay nowhere near Dens.

He's gubbed.

I disagree entirely - he's got 15 league goals over the past 2 seasons whilst playing for complete and utter dross. He got 12 goals at Utd last season which would have him comfortably our top goalscorer.

15 league goals in 38 league games is a decent strike rate IMO.

The ex DAB factor means some will never accept him though.

We've signed loads of ex-dabs so can't see that being a problem.

49 goals between 2012/2013 and 2013/2014 and then 30 goals in the three seasons since suggests a player on the slide. He certainly looked a lot deadlier when he scored doubles in the two 4-1 wins over us in the club 12 season than he does now.

From that comment alone either you haven't seen our last 6 games or you aren't seeing what's in front of you. It's totally dismissive of what's actually happened. There's been some very sound tactical changes and thinking in the last 2 games.

As for McKay. No.

Only seen highlights but we seem much quicker forward, more direct using the wings and getting crosses in. How many headers have we scored in last 2 games? And should have had more!

Not only that we seem able to change tactics not only from week to week but during the game as well as was seen at motherwell, terrific game management.

McCann really is showing up PH for being either tactically inept or completely stubborn. Accusations which had been levelled at PH constantly on here and elsewhere for a long time!
