World's Highest Earning Player

Recommended Posts

It's been revealed that Ezequiel Lavezzi (an unused sub in Argentina's last game) earns an eye-watering £798k a week at Hebei China Fortune. What an obscene amount of money to earn in seven days.

Looks like he's doing a good job of assimilating into the culture.

Some of those Chinese deals must be under scrutiny from FIFA and the Chinese government  - must be some kind of scam - money laundering maybe?

When i lived in Hong Kong there were plenty such scams reported - paying way over the odds prices for apartments that sometimes didn't even exist was one favourite.

Apparently the Chinese government is the reason it is happening. China sees football as the world's most popular sport and wants to have a world class international team and the best league.

If a businessman invests £40m a year for Lavezzi to play for a Chinese team he gets huge benefits in return. I don't know what exactly but I imagine it's stuff like tax exemption.

The Chinese Government started the ball rolling by stating they wanted to host a World Cup and win it (by 2050 if i remember rightly) - that gave the green light to clubs and their wealthy owners to go ahead and make ridiculous deals like the one you mentioned, and be able to point at the government and say we're doing as you asked. Yep, there will be an element of tax avoidance, but that's probably the least dubious thing about it. I suspect a fair bit of money being washed clean with these deals.  I read somewhere that Chinese business people are happy to write off up to 80% of black money to get the remaining 20% cleaned.  Amazing stuff.

FIFA is hardly in a position to scrutinise anyone when it comes to financial affairs ?

Fair point mate - still, two wrongs don't make a right and all that!

Or should that read two Wongs in this case?
