Average Crowds

After our final home game of the season I thought it might be worth taking a look at average gates.

The figures suggest we are comfortably the fifth biggest club in the league. However, the gap to the smaller clubs is not massive so the advantage we hold over the likes of Killie and Motherwell is going to be nowhere near the advantage Aberdeen and Hearts hold over us (in terms of being able to offer higher wages).

Personally, I think the term "top six budget" is a bit unhelpful given that there's very little between 5th and 12th in terms of income/wages.

Our home crowds for run of the mill league games haven't been the best this season compared to our first season up but the last 3 home crowds at Dens have been tremendous and have all surprised me one by one.

6200 Dees against Hamilton

6550 Dees against Ross County

5300 Dees against Inverness

The support is there. We just need to get it right on the park and pricing wise but it seems we are destined to fk both up season after season.

Think our average has dropped considerably, were we not over 7k last season

No. 6122 last season. 6966 the season before. We lost the Derbies this year but got double home games against the OF and Aberdeen.

Home crowds themselves are much the same, maybe a slight improvement on some games.

And yes, that Aberdeen stat is nonsense.

Actually when you really break it down, you can see how the crowds work out the way they do.

Season 14/15 = 2 Derbies, 3 games against Celtic and 3 against Aberdeen

Season 15/16 = 2 Derbies, 1 game against Celtic and 1 against Aberdeen

Season 16/17 = 0 Derbies, 2 games against, OF and Aberdeen.

The average attendances work out pretty much what you'd expect. The reason Killie aren't far off us is they give 10000 tickets to the OF because they have a bigger stadium.

I'd like to see a graph that only included home attendances. I reckon ours is fairly consistent at about 5000. Next season we'll be without  Accies and/or Inverness who each bring a couple of bus loads. Hibs will replace them and maybe Falkirk too who will both bring much bigger crowds.

Primary point = anyone who says the club needs the Derbies is wrong. :)

Taking away fans out the equation, we get roughly a couple of hundred either side of 5000 Dundee fans at Dens for league games this season. Anything above that isn't regular such as the 6550 Dees against Ross County and the 6200 Dees against Hamilton.

Killie seem to get just over 3000 most league games against small supported away teams so I would say our core home support is 5000 and theirs is 3000.

Simply put, we are miles ahead on them on home fans only but they get a big boost with massive Old Firm supports as you said.

We have the clear 5th biggest home support in the league and the clear 7th biggest in the country as Hibs and United are ahead of us.

Would say Falkirk are the clear 8th biggest in the country as they seem to get about 4500 to 5000 home fans most games which is considerably more than Killie, Motherwell, St Johnstone, Partick etc.
