Kostadin Gadzhalov could be thrown straight into the first-team after confirmation that James McPake will miss at least two weeks.

The Bulgarian, signed on a free transfer last weekend, faces a battle with German Thomas Konrad and Iain Davidson for the two spots at the heart of the Dark Blues backline.

The news of McPake’s diagnosis is a huge blow for manager Paul Hartley, who looks like being without the former Northern Irish international defender for up to four games. McPake, who was withdrawn against Ross County after suffering the knock, will miss the visit of Motherwell this weekend as well as the trip to Aberdeen a week on Saturday.

With the games coming thick and fast in January, he could also be absent for Kilmarnock (h) on Wednesday, January 21, as well as the journey to Paisley to take on strugglers St Mirren on Saturday, January 24.

With that, Paul has a decision to make. It seems most likely he will give the reins back to the usually-reliable but out-of-form Konrad. But who is paired with him is the question. Davidson strolled through the 90 minutes against the Staggies but new boy Gadzhalov has been impressing behind closed doors at the club’s Riverside training base.
