Dundee’S Alex Harris Made Fitting Farewell To Oval Ball Game

Here’s a tester for lovers of sporting quiz trivia — name the current Dundee player who has scored a goal at Hampden as well as a try at Murrayfield?

The answer is on-loan Hibs winger Alex Harris.

The wide player, who cannot wait for this afternoon’s game against league leaders Aberdeen, scored a try at the home of Scottish rugby in 2009 to help Edinburgh Academy defeat George Watson’s College 29-21 in the Scottish Schools Under-15 Cup. That match marked the end of Harris’s career in the oval ball game as he turned all his attention to playing for Hibs.

He netted at Hampden in the 2013 Scottish Cup semi-final against Falkirk with his stunning long-range strike sparking a comeback for the Edinburgh side who came back from 3-0 down to go through to the final 4-3.

Two years on, he scored in just his second game for the Dark Blues last week against Motherwell with the help of a deflection off an opposition defender. And Harris admitted that it had been so long between the two goals, he wasn’t exactly sure how to celebrate.

He said: “I just hit it and obviously I got a bit lucky with the deflection. Looking back at it, I don’t know why I hit it, to be honest. It was quite early in the game and I was probably just looking to get a shot away. I was a bit surprised when it went in but I will take any goal. I was definitely claiming it!

“I scored in the Falkirk game a couple of years ago so it has been a while and I was just glad to get it. I still felt a bit weird celebrating as it took that deflection.â€

There was certainly plenty to celebrate when he took his final bow as a rugby player at Murrayfield but he admitted he always knew in his heart of hearts that he would eventually have to switch all his attention to football.

He said: “I had to make the choice whether to take rugby more seriously or just concentrate on football. To be honest, football has always been the main thing for me. I have played it since I was nine and it is the big one for me. I went to Edinburgh Academy which is a rugby school and I played it at an early age. I used to play on the wing and my last game was for the Under-15s winning a cup final at Murrayfield. It was a great ending to my rugby career, especially as I scored a try. I enjoyed rugby but football was always going to be my choice.â€

Harris’s move to the Dark Blues with Martin Boyle heading in the opposite direction to Hibs came very much as a surprise. The product of the Easter Road youth system admitted he was slightly apprehensive about making the switch but has settled in well at Dens. He is raring to go once again this afternoon against an Aberdeen side in great form at the top of the league and itching for revenge after Dundee dumped them out of the Scottish Cup at the end of November.

Harris said: “I think I have done fairly well since I came in to Dundee and I am really enjoying it. But last week the result for the team was the most important thing getting us back to winning games. We can now look forward to this weekend.

“The lads have looked confident in the couple of weeks I have been in and I think we showed last Saturday that we are great going forward. We can also defend as well. Obviously Aberdeen have been doing really well winning eight league games in a row and not conceding goals. We know it will be tough but I think if we play to our best then we can definitely get a result.

“We have a lot of faith in each other and we know if we work hard as a team like we did last week we can beat anyone. Dundee showed the last time they played Aberdeen that they can do that and hopefully it will be the same again.â€
