Nicky Low - Eligible?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if anybody has seen anything in the press with comments from management about if he can actually play for us?

My understanding is that a cross border loan is technically a transfer and the loan team are technically considered owning the players and having their registration (why Hearts were exempt to the limit when loaning 20 players from Lithuania). That would mean that the registration would need to be processed back and I think that this might have to be done in January at the earliest (despite him being on our pay roll and insured, player registration isn't automatic).

The rules may have changed but we had a bit of an issue getting John Gibson back from his loan with the SFA claiming a returning cross border loan would be a breach of our transfer embargo (although they relented and allowed common sense when we said we'd need to forfeit the Sky game against Motherwell which played a big role in our survival).

Had a look at his Twitter and there's nothing on there about it.

Interesting reading his posts. There's a lot of love for Derry City, delight at Morton beating St Mirren and some banter with GGH but nothing about Dundee. Makes me wonder if he's played his last game for us. I suppose it all hinges on whether he's free to play. Even then though he could find himself out in the cold like Vincent and Williams.

I think it would only be an issue if we were the team loaning the player outside the transfer window. Low has come to the end of his contract with Derry so has essentially been released. Normally a released player would be free to sign for another cross border club so I would assume the same would apply here.

Whether he plays for us again is a different story. If I was McCann I would give him a chance at least especially as he has done so well at Derry.

As an E.U.  citizen had he not got the right to be employed anywhere within the E.U. ?  I do not know, just asking . Whilst Derry football club  is located in Northern Ireland, is it not registered with  The  Irish Football League  and he would have played his away matches in a foreign land ? I love to confuse people :D

Players can be employed anywhere but it's the registration held by their FA that defines them as eligible or not. We could make him clean the dressing rooms for employment!

The caveat to that though is that you can only really sign a player who was released in another country if they had their release before the window shut usually. Workarounds exist like amateur status I think but just don't know if it's well defined for this situation.
