Prior to December 27, Dundee defender Gary Irvine hadn’t found the net in over three years.

Well, excluding an horrific own goal in last year’s Scottish Cup, the versatile wing-back hasn’t seen much action in front of goal.

Going back to a 4-2 defeat at Livingston, in August 2011, was the last time he found his name on the right side of the score sheet.

Back to the present day and the 2014/15 season looks set to be the best yet for Irvine, who the Dees have dubbed the ‘white Cafu’ due to his marauding forward runs, similar to that of Brazil legend Cafu.

His first goal of the season, and first ever in the top flight, came as a late consolation in the 3-1 defeat to St Mirren - 131 games since his last goal.

Three weeks later, he bagged another in the 4-1 win over Motherwell.

Now, the 29-year-old has been given the SPFL goal of the week award with a stunning team effort at Pittodrie.

The strike will have felt even more special as it broke Aberdeen’s impressive seven-game clean sheet record. In his fifth season at Dens Park and a staple of Paul Hartley’s side, it looks like Gary Irvine is enjoying the best spell of his career.
