Sweden V Italy

Recommended Posts

Will Sweden be able to hold on to their 1-0 aggregate lead in the San Siro?.....or maybe even extend it?

.....or will we see Italy handed their 'rightful' place in the finals, in similar manner to the way they were handed their path to Euro 2008, 10 years ago at Hampden? ;)

The ref's already refused to consider 2 penalty claims from Sweden, and the natives are getting restless, as half-time approaches. Pity Ibrahimovic isn't there, that might have been interesting. :)

Sweden with fairly limited defenders playing in a classic back four are going to the World Cup after not conceding against Italy for 180 minutes.

Hopefully our manager is watching that and realises what can be achieved. I'm 99% certain Killie will score on Saturday but it shouldn't be inevitable.

That's the first time since 1958 that Italy have failed to reach the World Cup. Had a look at Dundee's team in 1957/58. Bill Brown, Alex Hamilton, Bobby Cox, Gordon Black, Bert Henderson, Ralph McKenzie, Doug Cowie, George Christie, Alan Cousin, Dave Sneddon, Hugh Robertson and Willie Thornton was manager.

The standard must have been unbelievably high as the Dee only finished 11th.

The squad we've got now will likely finish 11th, and are sh**e. :P

Penalty decision was ridiculous. The ref must have seen that.

I don't think that's as nailed on a penalty as you Cobra, to me it looks completely accidental. His hand is down by his side, the ball is struck from about 3 yards away and he makes no movement towards the ball with his arm. I've seen them given, definitely, but I think it's one of those frustrating ones that all referees will interpret totally differently.

Sweden's 2 penalty claims for handball were fairly similar...quite often, if a ref ignores one, he tends to award a subsequent one even though it's no more 'clear-cut' than the one he didn't give.

I just saw Italy's claim for a first half pen, on the news....if the ref had been intending to ensure an Italy win, I think he'd definitely have given that one. I guess he was consistent in his interpretation of the 3 incidents...a rare thing now. I didn't watch the whole match, so he could have been sh*te/biased the rest of it though!

Surprised you see it like that an-dee. The Italy player has his right arm behind him as the ball is knocked into the box.

Just as the ball passes him, the defender straightens the arm to stop it going past him. Looks like a nailed on penalty to me.

I thought the defender moved his arm forward slightly to block the ball, but whether that was 'natural movement' or a reflex action to stop the ball, only he knows.

What that 2nd photo does highlight, though, is that the ref would not have been able to see whether the ball hit arm, side or thigh of the defender. The linesman for that half was on the far side, and there were around half a dozen players between him & the defender, and he'd have been looking along the line of the last defender, which I think was penalty spot level....so his view would also have been obstructed. I'd imagine if this had been a match with the extra 2 officials, the one on that side of the goal-line might have seen it clearly.

A video review might have been the only 'conclusive' view, but then we can't agree on this forum, so it would still come down to an official's interpretation of 'ball to hand' v 'hand to ball'.
