Dundee manager Paul Hartley is backing Luka Tankulic to provide goalscoring support to on-fire frontman Greg Stewart.

The 23-year-old German, signed in the summer from VFL Wolfsburg, has impressed of late and could start against St Mirren in Paisley tomorrow. Hartley, who watched Stewart hit his 13th goal of the season from the penalty spot in Wednesday’s 1-0 win over Kilmarnock at Dens, said: “Hopefully, we will start to see the best of Luka.

“It has not been all that easy for him when you think of the injury trouble he has had but that’s all in the past. He has been working ever so hard in training and in games to be fair. Now he just needs a goal or two which would be big for him.

“We knew when we brought him here that he was a talented player so we’ve got confidence in him.â€

The Dark Blues were without full-back Paul McGinn through injury against Killie and fellow defender Kostadin Gadzhalov started on the bench because of a thigh injury. And Hartley insists they’ll have to indulge in some squad rotation to the fullest amid this hectic run of fixtures.

He said: “We’ve got a lot of matches in the month of January. It’s a busy month for us which we’re relishing. But we don’t want to rush people back either so we obviously have to be careful with the squad.â€
