Great result today but why am I alone in thinking that we dodged a bullet somewhat. But for Bain we could have been three down by half time . Worse than that, they had another three free headers in the second half. Whilst I am first to agree that McPake is an effective and combative defender far to often he is posted missing when it matters most, How often was he stranded in midfield this afternoon when he should be anchored in front of Bain. Basics really.

Our defence does worry me a lot. Really don't feel comfortable when Dyer plays. Got caught sleeping a couple of times today at the back post with players lurking behind him.

Totally agree.. I said the same thing in another thread. If we had been facing a half decent striker today we would have been at least three down at half time.

We need to prioritise our defence in my view. Get back to the basics and do everything possible to field a consistent back four.

Defending crosses, marking at corners / set pieces, tracking runners in the channels.. The whole lot needs to improve. We were solid defensively at the start of the season but we're miles away from that just now.

Nobody is in charge when McPake goes walkabout. How often did we see Godzilla on his own this afternoon with only Thomson(!) helping outin front of him?

Just watched the highlights and I cannot believe the atrocious marking. For Arquin to be left with this much space is unbelievable. Our defenders get pulled out of position, they ball watch and they're shockingly unaware of opposition players creeping into dangerous positions. Arquin is left with the same kind of chance as Goodwillie but thankfully can't beat Bain.

This should have been 2-0 St Mirren. Dyer is marking their most dangerous player but when McLean makes a run to meet the corner, Dyer is static. He is so unaware of what's going on he tries to meet the ball with his boot even though McLean has already met it with his head.

This is just more terrible defending. Once again a completely free header. Should have been 2-2 here but McGinn wastes another opportunity for St Mirren. Delighted with the three points but car crash defending from Dundee.

Just watched the highlights there Cobra, and those 3 chances were what stood out for me too! First one, Irvine is caught up field but Mcpake loses the boy completely. Second one, well Willie dyer hand you rhead in shame. The most pathetic effort at challenging for the ball on your own 6 yard line. And thirdly, McGowan stops as Mcginn runs in. 3 very poor pieces of defending which like some have said would have cost us at least another goal or two and probably the match had we been playing a team with a striker with a bit more quality.

Just wanted to note also, having watched back the highlight now, I think it was a very very harsh sending off for the boy. Not complaining obviously. It could have been worse, his dive was proceeded by Thomson giving the ball away 35 yards out putting us under more pressure.

A win is a win. And I really dont care if we win ugly. But like we saw in that match that one will never speak of again, make these mistakes against better opposition and we will be hammered. Desperatley need to get that back 4 sorted out.

EDIT to say - look at the positioning of McPake again in the third picture. Great if Gadz isnt infront of McLean already , but not so great when you have left the boy Arquin in acres of space behind you, leaving Irvine to try and get back in to cover. Much the same as the first chance.

Yep shocking defending from us at times, we definitely had the luck test as we appeared to gift them chance after chance, I'm just thankful they couldn't put the ball in the net

In too many games this season it has looked like we have been half asleep in the first half of games and especially in the first 10 or 15 minutes.  This goes back as far as the first Partick game at Dens when Partick nearly overran us.  Whatever PH or McCabe are saying at half time in these games needs to be drilled into the team before the start of the game itself.  In too many games the difference between our 1st half and 2nd half performances are like chalk and cheese.

I don't think McPake is the biggest culprit for that first one dblair. Gadzhalov goes out to meet McLean, who knocks it wide to their winger Mallan. Dyer has tracked McGinn's run to the near post but then runs out wide to meet Mallan even though Gadzhalov is already going out to face him. McPake leaves Arquin at the back post to mark McGinn at the front post and Mallan cleverly dinks it over the top. There are actually eight Dundee players in our box when Arquin receives the ball in acres of space in front of our goal. It's desperate stuff. Looks as though most of our team just chase whoever has the ball and give zero consideration to what they might do next. In this situation Irvine and Davo could be racing back to help McPake. Also Bain and McPake could be screaming for guys to get back.

Part of me wonders if we want to finish top six if this is the standard of defending for the rest of the season.

I think we're going to need to look for a really commanding centre-half in the summer to organise the back four.

We definitely need defenders and midfielders than can win the ball cleanly in the tackle.

Last week some of Jmacs efforts to tackle Killies attackers was simply woeful and it's not just him, most of our players get near to the opposition but rarely make a challenge, our positioning is also suspect as previous comments make clear.

We have too many of this type of player in the squad.

Still it was a great 3 points, hope we can strengthen as far as finances will allow in the close season.

And two decent full backs
