Northern Soul

I know it's a bit of a niche market, but there's a wee Nothern Soul night on for an hour on a Sunday at St Leonard's church hall from 7-8pm. Most fun exercise I've ever done. The guy is looking for more men to attend it, even though NS is usually a very male thing. If you've ever wanted to learn the moves or want to do a bit of exercise in a fun way, then you should come along. It was brilliant fun.

Loved Northern Soul music in the 70's and early 80's.  Remember Alex Sweeney used to play 3 or 4 Northern Soul tunes at the Sands each night,  Never had the nerve or enough alcohol to get up and dance to it though.  Far too energetic when you're trying and failing to look cool.

When you say 'learn the moves' you really surprised me.  I assumed the moves were just made up as you went along.

Many, many happy memories of nights in the Sands, probably 1977 through to 1981(I think).  Heard many of my now favourite tunes for the first time in the place.  Fri/Sat/Sun for me. From what I remember on those nights he would play about 15 minutes of Northern Soul and the floor would empty for the NS aficionados.

Sounds great. I was born in the wrong era. It is essentially just making it up, but some people find the rhythm really difficult. The men have got it harder 'cause they have all the gymnastics to do! I'm not that great, but I love it. Wish I could have been around in the Wigan Casino days.

Totally don't agree with the drugs side of it, but you could see why people would need them to dance all night!

Wow, that's taking me back...

Was very into the old Soul Punting in days gone by... used to clear the floor for me at the St Fergus disco whenever Uptown Festival (the LONG version!!) came on.

Wasn't too bad at the 'floorwork' too... (But I do remember deciding to learn the "swallowdive" and practicing at home... almost broke both my knee-caps ion the concrete floor... pain was awful... still.. persevered and got it down to a *T* !! :)

How does that song go...?  "Those days are passed now...."

(keep the faith!)
