Just found out that Roger Bannister has passed away at 88.

The man probably of the most iconic sporting moment of the last century. The first mile under 4 minutes.... most of us would be hard pressed to do it under 20 minutes! :lol2:

Am I right in that this only lasted for a couple of weeks and was broken again?

A bit longer than a couple of weeks, about 6 weeks I believe.

Although I was only 12 years at the time, I remember how significant that race was.

My older brother had recently joined the Hawkhill Harriers, so their was an overall interest in athletics. Also I had just moved fae the Joeys to Lawside Academy & had been entered to represent Lawside School, in one of the races ...  On the Special Inter-School Sports Days.

(Eh had been picked (unseen) on the basis on awe meh pals recommendations, fae the previous primary skale)

.... Eh come in last :(

The following week, eh went doon tae the Hawkhill Harriers Club to remove my name off their waiting list ...

No only had my name been already removed by my brother ... (he did in fact disassociated himself from me) by trying to convince fellow members, that eh wis mair o' a (distant) cousin, than his actual real brother

I should mention ... Although, I did come in last in my debut race of the week before,I was only a little over the 4 minute mark :)

Mind the race wis only one lap (400yds) ... And everbody's got tae start somewhere:chaplin:

I knew it wasn't years before someone else broke his record. Still a massive achievement considering the times.

Not wishing to sound sexist ...

But although the records continue to be broken, it seems accepted, that no woman will ever break the 4 minute mile.

However, in the interest of science (& statistics) I like to check oot these women athletes. The one thing I've noticed,

Even with brief, extra tight shorts they wear (streamlined) & flappy aboot vests (allows the freedom & air to circulate)

they may still have a bit to go ;)

Recent focus & development of their calf & thigh muscles in their long shapely legs (easy noo) must surely be a help :excited:

(Slight "stirring"  in the Long-Johns area):chaplin:
