Must Be A 'City Of Dundee' Thing!

Think this is the reason why some players do really well at clubs like Inverness but can't hack it at a bigger club. Vincent and Williams spring to mind! You have to be mentally tough to make it at a bigger club. It's not just about ability. I'm sure someone on here was suggesting Donaldson had improved a lot at Inverness and would be worth us signing. Those comments he's made to the media would not make me confident that he would do well for us.

Smaller club and less fans = less pressure. The bigger the club the more expectation and therefore more criticism that will come your way if you're not performing. Happens everywhere. Even Real Madrid give their team pelters when things don't go exactly to plan so I don't think it's a Dundee thing. The Dundee clubs are the 6th biggest in Scotland so anything less than at least challenging for 6th is not going to be acceptable for some.

Rightly or wrongly Dundee are always going to having moaning fans. The problem at Dundee just now is the whole atmosphere is flat so the moaners are the ones being heard the loudest. The majority of the support will give encouragement to the players if they see them giving everything and are trying to attack. At the moment the style in which the manager wants us to play is at odds with how most of the fans want us to play.

I think that was me. I made the comment that the profile of player that was being suggested of a young athletic defender fit him perfectly and ability wise, he impressed me. I wouldn't be advocating signing him at this time for the reasons you've mentioned but if he comes through another season and the maturity continues, I would certainly consider him an option.

For what it's worth as well, the pressure is always going to be higher here but the managers have a responsibility to protect players as much as is possible. Having a young squad has its upsides but I think the biggest problem with United that season (and ourselves this year) is that they've got so much youth and not enough in the way of senior pros. I think you've really got to have half a dozen guys who are well established at this level and have done it all before - some guys like Hendry are natural leaders and self-assured but it's more often the case that these attributes are just developed with time.

I also think our signing policy at times has left a lot to be desired. I don't mind if a player is a bit of a firey figure and maybe been misbehaved as, quite often, that firey side to their personality does form into something desirable a few years down the line (i.e. McGowan) but I do think we need to see that maturity in some part before we take a punt. Roberts and some of the 20s (who I won't name) had plenty of ability but seemed total fannies from the outset which was easily predictable going by previous behaviour.
