Is it really bad that I would take him back in a heartbeat? I ken he’s no technically great but loves tae get stuck in and the type you’d want in a relegation battle.. we’re missing that dig in the middle of the park.

please dinna shoot me down for that lads ?

We should never have let him leave in the first place. He played more than any other player as we finished top six in the our first season up. Most on here said it was time for Jim Mac to go in 2015 as Dundee needed to "kick on". Unfortunately that hasn't quite happened.

I'm sure that post was simply him stating that he was missing playing regularly and enjoying his football again. After terrible injury history down south he just wants to start playing again.

The reason why there is rumours is due to the video that he posted which was him playing for us. That's it.

I was glad to see him leave when he did as I believed (like many of us) that we would bring in someone who was better in the midfield and with a bit more quality.

We're still waiting on that type of player but bringing Jim back will not solve any of our problems.

I'd love to see him back too.

I long for the day when I look at the Dundee team and don't think that honest tryer Jim McAlister (who I liked at Dens) wouldn't walk into it. Given the fact we must've signed more than 40 players since he left that's pretty damning of Hartley and McCann's recruitment.

I liked Jim Mac to, but is he not getting on a bit now.

A lot of injuries - so severe that I don't think anyone would throw a contract at him this early.

Wouldn't mind him if he was relatively cheap and proved his fitness. I don't think he'd walk into our strongest 11 tbh but he can cover anywhere and be an important player if he was still as fit as last time.

Regardless, this is a nothing story I think. I think the summer signings will mostly be from down south or abroad.

If I recall, we were very optimistic about the future of our club at the end of our first season finishing top 6 and a player like McAlister was not what we needed to progress. He was Mr Reliable but very rarely put in a motm performance in the top flight.

It was the right decision to let him go.

Unfortunately, Hartley failed to bring in a better quality of midfielder that we all expected. I have no doubt that Nicky Low was supposed to be this guy but look how that turned out.

We brought in Vincent the season after and he was even worse.

Let's not get sentimental here and view Jim as some type of midfield maestro. He gave his all but offered very little in terms of quality. It was Hartley's fault for not bringing in anyone better.

He was always fit, played in a variety of position and never stopped running. The midfield battled was half won before a ball was kicked because we knew McGowan and McAlister wouldn't give the opposition a moment's break. Obviously you still need other types of players for a balanced side but a workhorse like Jim Mac was important.

It's all very well saying "bin him, sign better" but where are we supposed to be find someone with Jim's excellent attitude, workrate and fitness in addition to being a better quality footballer? We're a bottom six club that spends £1k a week on wages, same as Partick and Ross County. Our options are limited.

Liked Jim Mac but that ship has sailed imo.
Like some have said , Never been replaced - shows how bad our recruitment has been under PH/NM

You have to remember this was at a time when we had just finished top 6 and were looking to improve on that performance going into the next season.

We needed better quality and he was deemed not good enough.

Hartley was still the messiah at this stage and the majority of us were of the opinion that he had an eye for a player and could bring in better. He got it absolutely nailed on with the signing of Hemmings but that was about it.

It's a shame that our ambition has now gone and we are fighting relegations battles. It shows ya how mad things have become when we would take him back.
