When I lived in Nigeria, there were always giggles when I mentioned Dundee. One colleague told me that it is because it sounds like Dunderhead which was often used in schools to signify, well, a dunderhead. The Dundee United thing might just be a handy and exotic (for Africans at least) twist added when they did become a little famous in the 80s.

I doubt very much that any more than a few thousand NIgerians would have been aware of a tour by Dundee United in 1972 and even fewer who knew if it was a disaster. It's hard to imagine it becoming it becoming widespread for that reason, at least, in a country of 60m then, and 195m now.
