Argentina showed the bad side of slow tippy tappy tonight.

Walking pace football can be torturous to watch and easy to defend against.

Less to do with style but more about being a shambles of a football team.  Little organisation or urgency in their play.

And they were dirty. Hope they go out.

Amazing for Croatia.....smaller pop than Scotland. Visit them SFA CEO.

We do need to look at what other small countries are doing. The way the Balkan countries play is different to us but there maybe other countries that we could get something from 'style' wise. It would have to be something that resonates with our way of playing football although that could be changeable over time.

Just guessing but I would imagine if you looked at the team lines from the Croatian League (if there is one), most of the names would be Croatian.  Next season, at some point, it is more than feasible that Kerr could be the only Scot in our starting eleven.  Home grown players are not being allowed to develop because of the cut throat nature of our leagues and a system which ensures the needs of the few are looked after more than the needs of the many.  Sure I stole that last bit from a movie somewhere. :)

Exactly. That's what I was getting at in #5

Decent players from the 'smaller countries' end up going to the 'bigger countries' to get more $$$$$ in their wallets.

I wonder if Croatia just got lucky with some exceptionally talented youngsters coming through at the same time. No doubt they have had some good coaching and scouting but I imagine guys like Modric and Rakitic raise the standard, pushing others to follow. Ten years from now Croatia could be worse than Scotland.

You look at the Dutch. They reached the World Cup final in 2010 and the semis in 2014, and now they've just missed two tournaments in a row.

Don’t think so Cobra. They’ve qualified for 10 of the 12 major championships since FIFA recognised them in 1993.

Plenty great Croatian players playing for Yugoslavia and other Eastern block countries before 1993 as well.

Interesting point, I don't even pretend to know the answer but the other extreme is countries like Ingerland who look on paper like a great team (traditionally) but miss something too. They hoover up the best talent from around the world and still struggle. :lol2: The Spanish, German, Italian and French leagues all bring guys in from 'abroad' and on an international stage generally make a better go of it. I don't think there's a magic formula, or of there is, I can't see it.
