Dundee boss Paul Hartley wants his players to maintain their unbeaten league run right up to what could be an enforced break in March. But he knows they’ll need all their battling qualities to maintain their streak against relegation-threatened Motherwell and Ross County before the end of the month.

The Dark Blues head to Fir Park on Saturday and then make the long trek up to County on the last day of February. After that, they could be without a competitive game until they face Aberdeen on Monday, March 23.

The first weekend of the month is free because they’re out of the Scottish Cup, and the following week’s clash with Celtic is off because of the Hoops’ League Cup Final clash with Dundee United. That game could be slotted in sometime prior to the Aberdeen trip but, if it isn’t, in terms of league business, Hartley’s men will be idle for 23 days.

He admits that won’t be ideal and he will look to arrange a friendly and possibly a training trip down south to keep things ticking over. Right now, he wants the focus on making it eight league outings unbeaten when Dundee head for Fir Park. Although the Steelmen have been struggling and his side have won there already this term, the gaffer is taking nothing for granted.

“Right now, in every game, there is a lot at stake. You have the ones at the top, or we go to Motherwell on Saturday and they are fighting to stay up. Then there’s teams like us aiming for the top six. It’s like three mini leagues just now — top, middle and bottom — so we all have something to fight for.

“That makes every game tough but we are on a good run in terms of the league. Forget the cup result (against Celtic) and the league has been good — seven undefeated, four wins and three draws. We want to keep that form going.â€

A weekend win would keep Dundee in the top six and, with fifth-place Hamilton on the slide right now, they look catchable. Paul, though, will be happy to take three points and see where that leaves his side.

“It’s nice we are in the top six and we just want to try to stay in it. We’ve clawed back a lot of points on Hamilton and you always try to look at the next team above to catch. Can we catch Hamilton? I don’t know but the most important thing for the team is to try to keep winning.â€
