If I was him I would probably prefer not to have someone of Kenny Miller's experience and reputation sitting in the corner. I imagine McPake would prefer to work with younger players who are more eager to please and willing to do exactly what they're told, but the No. 1 priority is to win the league and experience will be vital. Hopefully JM doesn't make the same mistakes as his predecessors and rush to fill the team with his own signings while pushing everyone else towards the exit door. He's resigned Cammy, tried to get Curran to stay and is looking for Waddell to re-sign. I'm not sure that looking to move on Davies and Miller is clearing the decks. Most of the decks were cleared by the fact that half the squad was only here on loan, while Ralph has moved on under his own steam. Parrish, on the other hand was released by McIntyre and O'Dea has retired.

I know what you're trying to say mate but comparing Davies to him isn't really like for like. McPake's decisions seem sound so far so if (and it is an if) he wants the older players gone then I'm sure he'll have good reason. Davies is certainly nowhere near Irvine's level but then the current Championship is of a massively lower standard than the old First Division. We won't be watching the likes of Adamczuk, Weighorst, Latapy and Sauzee this season. I've been very impressed with McPake's decisions so far. If he has a bit of a clear-out that's up to him. We can assess his decisions in the months ahead once the season gets underway.
Cobra Posted 21 June 2019 Report Share Posted 21 June 2019 Maybe Gary MacKenzie is a better comparison than Brian Irvine. MacKenzie is getting on, he's had his injury troubles but he played an important role at the back as St Mirren won the Championship. Personally I'd like to take a look at Meekings and Davies in the League Cup games.

All the players who've gone either chose to or have had come to the end of their contracts, or had options to go. If Davies goes then anyone bringing him in will be taking a risk after last season, while it's presumed Kenny Miller will look good at Championship level but I'm not quite so sure. Agree that the standard has dropped off massively since the time of Brian Irvine though. The team that Duffy failed to get promoted (McCann, Hamilton, Weighorst/Smith, McQueen, Shaw, Pagued, Charnley, Pagued etc would be comfortable in the top flight these days and probably top 6. I said if he has a clear-out in the future that's up to him. There are doubts about what Davies and Miller can offer but they're under contract so unless another club wants to pay their wages I'd rather see what they can contribute. Crazy that we failed to win the First Division with that team. It was certainly entertaining though and it couldn't have been any tighter. Raith 69pts Dunfermline 68pts Dundee 68pts Respect to our current assistant for that title win given the quality of our squad back then.
Ricky Spanish Posted 21 June 2019 Report Share Posted 21 June 2019 Where has all this talk of Davies moving on come from?? Seem to recall McPake speaking very positively about him just a couple of weeks ago, that he was in top condition and ready to go, in fact that he'd had to tell him to slow down a bit he was working so hard.

Hopefully Nicholl proves the perfect foil for our young apprentice manager. It's early days but I've got a very good feeling about this season.
