Davedee77 Posted 25 October 2019 Report Share Posted 25 October 2019 I thought tonight was a great battling performance! Showed a lot of character tonight at a tough place. for me Byrne does a lot of dirty work for this side and he doesn’t get enough credit. forster was solid second half. Kerr played well but his distribution is a bit dodgy at times. Mcdaid was on fire at times tonight. Hemmings looked well up for it and battled really well.
TheDarkBlues Posted 25 October 2019 Author Report Share Posted 25 October 2019 Was that our first away win of the season?

Our attack in ineffective, our midfield is a collection of good players not really clicking and our defence is a horror show. There is so much for us to work on on the training ground. Thankfully this division is very forgiving so we might be able to stay in the title race without addressing the problems in our team, for a while at least. I can't help thinking a Jim Duffy-type signing to proactively take ownership of the defence would make the world of difference. Where do you get a player like that nowadays though? Not easy but if Livi can find Halkett maybe we can acquire that crucial CB who can boss things at the back and drive us towards another title.
Frank Grimes Posted 25 October 2019 Report Share Posted 25 October 2019 We're miles off where we need to be but thats ok for now. We need to learn how to win gritty games and hopefully we'll improve over time. Rotten game but one we're glad to win. Poor first half, improved in the second. McDaid and Dorrans excellent. Problems still up top and at the back. Keeper did fine.
thepole Posted 25 October 2019 Report Share Posted 25 October 2019 Some might criticise the 2nd half but if we played that way against Thistle we would be joint top Great 3 points Mcdaid might be frustrating but he is chipping in with goals. I'll take that all season long
DeeVinci Posted 25 October 2019 Report Share Posted 25 October 2019 Well there were signs of a team in that performance tonight. Much happier with McGhee in at centre back, team had a tad more control when defending and were willing to get forward, Byrne, Dorrans and McGowan are a solid if unexciting midfield trio. Still lots of areas to work on especially on getting better through balls to Hemmings as he was fed just high balls all night and he'll only flourish when he's heading towards goal not with his back to it. Result was a 10 out of 10 but the performance was maybe a 7 out of 10.
Harold Finch Posted 25 October 2019 Report Share Posted 25 October 2019 I didn't think we were that bad tonight, Dorrans has the quality to make time for himself to pick a pass, McGowan was busy as ever in midfield and scored a great goal, Nelson put in a decent shift. The way the Ayr players and fans treated McDaid tells you enough about him, he was fouled a lot and scored a cracking goal. Forster worries me, if he doesn't take out everything he loses the challenge and it leads to a chance for the other team. Johnson before Hemmings for me, DJ deserves a start against Alloa. Fin Robertson hasn't done much wrong but looks like he has lost his place in midfield for now.
1stevie Posted 25 October 2019 Report Share Posted 25 October 2019 Frustrating that we give opposition too much space and time especially between our midfield and defence. On top of that why do we look like we have never seen a ball before? We always seem to need a second touch. Was surprised Ayr got dragged down to kicking and tousling as they have shown they can play. Thought their "tackle" first half commentator said was 50/50 could/should have been red. Both feet off ground and no control. That said, great example of winning dirty and well happy to be coming home with 3 points.

Momentum is huge in football, two winnable games for us coming now before a massive derby.... Said it before, we have a decent set of players who are definitely capable of challenging at top end. Dundee United could have been 12 points clear if they had beat Alloa a few weeks back, it’s now down to 3.... Game on. Spot on
thepole Posted 25 October 2019 Report Share Posted 25 October 2019 Zero negatives tonight Honestly didn't know where our next away win was coming from yet we have just beaten a team above us in the league on their own turf. You don't get perfect performances in this league. Results is all that matters
DarkBlueKnight Posted 25 October 2019 Report Share Posted 25 October 2019 They’re joint top for a reason - had plenty plaudits over the season. Then we rolled into town and we’re two up . Ride our luck a bit but took the three points . That’ll do nicely .
RossBFD Posted 26 October 2019 Report Share Posted 26 October 2019 When this team slows down the tempo and takes its time, they can string some decent plays together. The passing between Cammy, Byrne and McDaid leading up to the first goal was simple and great, and Nelson's little nick did wonders and set McDaid free for a belter. Don't get me wrong, we were crap for the first 15 mins and I was in the middle of typing a moaning post on P&B about such sentiments, then Declan scored before I could finish. Clearly still faults, defense is still far too low with Forster in it. Great at close 1v1s, terrible when the ball is moving freely, and with Ayr it often is. I thought our performance improved after the goal, and the game was quite even by the time Gowser got the second. We'd battled our way up the pitch through their hammer throwers to get that FK. In the second half we were largely untroubled, and that feels good to say. Hope we keep that kind of play up throughout the season once we're up, instead of whatever we were doing against Partick. Most of the lads get pass marks for me this evening, with the shaky ones being Forster for being a slow git and being susceptible for every single lob ball over him to Moffat, Kerr sadly looked out of his depth when in his position, and was (as well as Nelson) at fault for the goal against, though was better going forward (as per). Never like to get on Cammy, but was rough watching him tonight. While Dorrans did his usual work of nice simple plays that kept the ball moving, he made many f**k-ups throughout and let Ayr loose as many times as Forster did with his "clearances". Positives now. McDaid was fantastic, all over the pitch and running rings round his ex-teammates. Can only hope he keeps it up against teams he hasn't played for. Gowser of course did a great job again tonight, vital for us in midfield. Hazard had an impressive debut showing despite being on 2 days' notice. Many key stops and his height is clearly a big part of his game, and the added security for crosses is much appreciated. Keep that up and we might have a conversation to have when Hamilton returns... only 1 game though. Byrne impressed me more than usual, as I tend to think he's normally anonymous and was poor last week. Apart from one moment early on, I thought he played real well and his passing was just as important as Dorrans', if not more so. Hemmings, despite not scoring again, I thought did his other jobs well. Held up play expertly and got us in better positions, and was a nuisance for the majority of the game for Ayr. Considering Nelson was playing out of position, I thought he did a great job with link-up play and progressing the ball. Iffy choice to shoot instead of an easy cross early on, but aside from that was solid. McGhee and Marshall were largely fine imo, neither here nor there. I'd say our defense is easily our weakest asset, it's far too slow for this league. I hope McPake identifies that and is looking for a quicker CB in January; we need the CB cover anyway. Overall I thought it was a good performance, not perfect obviously, but plenty enough to be considered worthy winners. Bring on Alloa.
