Rip Caroline Flack

So sad to hear about Caroline Flack taking her own life today.

While my thoughts go out to her and her family, I also have to ask what will happen to those in the media who vilified her at every chance that they got, especially the likes of the Sun and Daily Mail.

It is about time that the newspapers and tabloids in the UK were made to be responsible for the stories that they run, and the journalists are taken to account over the garbage that they print. If Flack took her own life due to the stories in the Newspapers, then it is about time that they were charged for libel, or even better, manslaughter.

Too long have the newspapers got away with this shit and not been held accountable.

It’s now  got to the stage where the majority of people now know a person who has died of drugs abuse or has taken there own life... This is a very sad indictment on today’s society... The Scottish government continue to cut funding in these areas yet Scotland and Dundee have one of the worst records in Europe, it’s clear this area needs further funding and qualified personnel to help.

Tragic news.

Very sad. Not a big fan but had followed events since she assaulted her boyfriend. Was shocked to hear the news last night and that her boyfriend had asked the CPS not to pursue the case.

Although not directly linked perhaps (?), but 3rd person now to have committed suicide having appeared on Love Island. Got a feeling that show will be pulled.

BigG, I was a NA councillor for a few years in Dundee, Scotland and England and I still have friends who work in NA, both in Scotland and Dundee. I worked with and counselled many addicts and I can tell you that your information is incorrect. For one, drugs in Scotland is not devolved, Drugs is reserved to Westminster, but I am sure you are aware of this?

Secondly, most of the drug and alcohol treatment centres in and around Dundee were closed due to Government Austerity cuts and were moved to the City centre. The places were addicts were able to get help and treatment were closed down or moved elsewhere. A lot of those qualified people you speak of have lost their jobs as part of Austerity cuts over the whole of the UK.  Since 2010, over 25 large and important drug/alcohol centres have been closed in Scotland alone.

Drug use is a symptom and not the cause, and without many of these centres, addicts are not getting the help which they need to get clean and live a normal life. To tackle drug use you have to be able to change the way with the way we deal with drugs in Scotland, and that requires changes to the law.

For example, The Scottish government and Scottish police want to decriminalise the use of certain classes of drugs, such as cannabis or weed, which would mean less people going into prison for minor drug offences. A safe place for addicts on stronger drugs such Heroin etc, to prevent overdosing, getting counselling and preventing spreading of viruses like HIV/Aids and hepatitis C, mainly due addicts sharing infected needles or leaving them lying about after usage.

The Scottish Drug Forum has been advocating these changes to mirror countries such as Portugal, Sweden, Holland etc to decriminalise and have drug consumption rooms, but so far, the UK government has refused to allow Scotland to make these changes.

Glasgow wants to setup a Safer drug consumption facilities but this has been blocked by the home office. It's interesting that the same idea was given the go ahead in Middlesbrough, but blocked in Glasgow.

You can read more about this here: https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/CHttpHandler.ashx?id=38604&p=0

Also, another factor to take into consideration, is the way that Scotland classes drug usage which is different to the rest of the UK. Drug usage in Scotland is considered and defined on these factors: Medical, social, psychological, physical, financial or legal problems. If you are taking a drug such as fentanyl which is a synthetic opioid, and you are arrested, then this could be classed as a drug related crime (Because you were taking fentanyl at the time).

The Scottish Government have announced an additional £12.5 million to address the harm associated with drug or alcohol use. It costs Dundee £1 million a year in methadone treatment alone to combat the likes of Heroin addiction. This treatment helps addicts move away from: using in the streets, dirty needles, spreading viruses such as aids and HIV, cutting drug based crime down and deaths by drugs or drug related issues. Methadone however should be the short term solution, on top of actual counselling to get to the heart of the actual reason behind the drug use.
