John Mcginn

Reading on P&B a few St Mirren fans saying that John McGinn will leave St Mirren if they go down. They reckon that his development fee would be in the region of 200k (A figure I'm not sure we'd be wise spending on another CM even if he is very good!). They also reckon/have heard rumblings that we'd be favourites for his signature. Probably has a lot to do with the fact that his 2 brothers play for the club.

Would you have him?

Just been catching up with the thread on Pie and Bovril now. Again, like the Queen's boys we have discussed quite a bit, it's a question of how this compensation thing will work.

Hard to find like for like examples but it does 'feel' right that he should be away for at least £200k based on his top flight contributions and St Mirren having some sort of elite academy (I believe that them, Celtic and Rangers are or were on a higher star level than any other teams in Scotland).

Thinking that, like you've suggested, this is to do with the fact that we have the other two McGinn's. I really don't see us paying a £200k fee for one player (unless we're not spending anywhere else which would be a bit risky and could go badly if he ends up bottling it due to his price tag or just gets injured).

If we have the chance to sign a player this valuable though and it's a good fee (that won't be detrimental) then great. I'd rather go two-three journeyman shorter and get someone who has a bit of sell on value and can maybe create a bit of a buzz. Reckon that we're in the process of trying to build a quality squad but given our recent history, we've had to rely on quantity a bit more than we would have liked.

We'd be able to accommodate him (as a narrow wide player in a formation with a natural winger on the other side if that makes sense) but I reckon that there would be a surprise departure if that happened (maybe Harkins or McGowan or even Stewart).

Harry as usual your post made a great deal of sense ........... until your last sentence.

May well have been the correct anaysis and outcome if this went ahead.

But eh widnae be happy at awe, to see Harkins, Mc Gowan, or Stewart go.

If we get top six there's no reason we shouldn't be able to fund a decent purchase like this one.

Bottom six? Money buy at this level might be off the agenda.

If anyone moves on it's likely to be Stewart (hopefully won't happen); then we'd have funds for several John McGinns.

I wouldn't be overly happy but like you agree, it may well be the outcome that unfolds. Think there may be a departure or two that catches us out based on what the Alloa fans have suggested about Hartley's decisive activity.

Sign for £200k and punt for at least three times that 18months later.

I'm all for shrewd accounting, but he is already highly regarded, getting him in for a year would be terrific business.

Sounds simple in practice but things don't always work out like that. So we spend £200k now and then go around 3 players shorter. Where can it put us?

Although he's highly rated, he's not had the best season and struggled a lot (in a sh**e team of course). Now what's to say that he'll actually be good with us (you'd be putting a lot of expectation on a 20 year old)? What's to say that he won't get a bad injury? If he doesn't deliver the goods, we are players short and could be dragged lower than we thought.

Assuming he'll be on around £1k a week, a three year deal will cost another £150k on top of what we've spent on him. That'd mean that a fee of at least £350k would be needed to break even (hopefully less if his contribution has led to greater league placings but can't really bank on that).

I think we should be taking gambles on young players but I don't think we're sufficiently balanced enough to do it yet. If we can get to an Inverness type squad (where they have real top 6 quality in every position and have replacements who are as good) then that's the time IMO.

EDIT: Obviously, that was the pessimistic view and he could well turn out to be worth it.

Maybe if the dev fee was £50k but I'd rather see the money used to increase Hartey's wage budget. Hopefully we can persuade his brother Stephen to sign for next season.
