Our Badge/shield In Danger?

Airdrie have been forced to change their badge from the start of next season as it breaks 'heraldic law' apparently.

The reason it breaks this ancient and dated law? 'if they continued to operate with the badge which is illegal as it contains letters within the 'shield'.'

That's right, you're not allowed letters within your badge/shield apparently.

Formartine United had to change their badge due to this law as it had a Saltire within it a couple of year back. Link.

Airdrie are appealing this, but if the appeal goes against them this could set a precedent and as the Daily Record states, 'But it is thought that dozens of other clubs may fall foul of the historic rules and that this could be the thin end of the wedge.'

Link.

Here's a post on P&B in relation to the debacle from an Airdrie supporter that is on their trust:

'The Lord Lyon has said that a number of clubs will be getting the same treatment. From memory the clubs mentioned as being next up were Rangers, Hearts, Raith Rovers, Ayr United, Dunfermline & either Dundee or Dundee United. Although that's just the first batch of clubs, the majority of clubs fall foul of the law in one way or the other. This wasn't something I read. I'm part of the Airdrie Supporters Trust. One of our members is a lawyer and he along with a local MSP represented Airdrieonians at a meeting with the Lord Lyon. '

Farcical outdated law and it's going to cost Airdrie a hell of a lot of money if their appeal isn't successful, but surely common sense will see through? Otherwise a lot of clubs in Scotland will be put in a tricky spot. Can't see how it is workable.

Very bizarre.

What happens if clubs don't change it? Do they get the jail?

I guess a solution for us would be to simply remove the shield leaving just the DFC like it was on the 70s and 80s strips. Or, revert back to a circle round the DFC like the late 60s strip that's currently on sale as a retro.

Why has this suddenly came to light and being pushed through after clubs using these badges for over 50 years?

Let's not get too excited. The issue seems to have arisen because someone wanted to register the Airdrie shield. The current Lord Lyon is Joe Morrow a former Dundee councillor, and a very sensible chap. Let's not go to the barricades - yet.

Heraldic Law is outdated-yes. (Most things Heraldic are outdated!) :)

But Unless you are looking to register one's *logo* (for that's all our club shields are) as some form of Heraldry then the law (surely?) does not apply.

As far as I remember, this is why people can get away with using club crests etc, as, for themost part, they are not 'registered' as such.

When making the "It's My Dundee" album I approached the club looking for clearance for the use of the crest on the cover, to be told the legal bods had said this was not required.

This seems to be gathering a bit more speed with Airdrie. Hopefully like the above post states, we should be more than safe, but if an issue were to somehow arise, here's the 'verdict' on each badge:

ETA: If that picture isn't enlarging like it should after you've clicked on it, try this link instead: Link.
