Surprisingly Good Signings

Recommended Posts

Which player did you have low expectations of when they arrived but were pleasantly surprised when they impressed for the Dee?

For me, Steven Tweed seemed like an uninspired signing by Jocky at the time but he made a big difference to our defence and helped us finish fifth.

Scott Bain.

Summer 2014, Letheren had just won us the league, won our player of the year and was our first choice goalkeeper going in to the Premiership.

I though we had signed Bain purely as back up and maybe one for the future and wasn't really expecting anything from a player from Alloa.

Fast forward to April 2015. Bain is our number one goalkeeper. He has been man of the match or in the running for man of the match every game he has played. He is rated at 7 figures. The only way Letheren will play for us again is if Bain gets injured.

Barry Smith ..

The ultimate inconspicuous signing when he arrived from Celtic.

Never in a million years did I imagine he would become a Dee Hall of Famer.

400 appearances and Almost fifteen years as player and manager.

Legend

Spot on.

Everyone was gutted when we sold big Morten and had not the first clue about Barry. Who could have predicted what he would go on to do for Dundee as a player, captain and manager.

While I agree with PRD, I can't see past Greg Stewart, seen as second fiddle to Hemmings and stepping up from P/T football to the second top scorer in the SPL behind an established 'name'. Some signing and it must be some year for the guy. I don't think any of us saw this one coming.

Can pretty much translate my Bain post word for word for Stewart.

Many thought the step up would be too big for him and the Tank was tipped to be top scorer.

Funny old game!

Speroni would be up there. South America was never a place you would shop for a top class keeper but he came in and turned out to be a star and has continued that with his level of consistancy in the english premier league.

Would also add Stewart, Irvine and Tweed to the list who didnt inspire me when signed but have proved me (and many others) wrong big time.

Not a signing as such but when Craig Forsyth came back from his loan spell I honestly didn't expect him to be anything special. Didn't seem to be too much hype about him and kind of assumed he would end up with the long list of Dee youngsters who's careers end up at the likes of Peterhead and Montrose. Now look at him, possibly going to be a Premiership player next season.

Also was raging when Jim Lauchlan signed but pretty sure he ended up being our player of the season
