New neighbour moved in next door to me a couple of weeks ago.He came through this morning to introduce himself.Coaching our U15's after returning from Murcia in Spain where he developed kids for Charlton and Sheff Utd.Seemed like a nice guy.

We used to call him Ziggy as with his red spiky hair he was like David Bowie!!

He played for St Johnstone after he left us. I think that he was expected to take over from Bobby Wilson as right back but it did not work out.

Would be first on the team sheet now. Struggled to get a game in 70s used to play as an old fashioned left half.. He was a better player than his nephews Steven and Gary who both got scotland caps.

I'm actually too young to properly mind of him as a Dundee player. Saw him loads for the Fermers though and he was always steady if nt exactly outstanding.

Agree with Notso in that Alec Caldwell struggled to get a regular game because our team was so damned good at the time.  A player of his talent would be a shoe-in just now.  I often think that those who don't remember the early 70's team wouldn't believe how good we were.  From what I remember he played at the end of this period but left (40 years ago) before it all started to go t1ts up.

Saw the 70's team at Dens against Leeds in a friendly when they were all pretty much ancient.Still looked class though.Sure we won 4-1.

He was still with us when it went t1ts up. Played 134 times and left during 79/80 season.

Was part of the squad that won the 1st division in 78/79.

I'll bow to the superior intellect on that one then Clearwater.    I was convinced he left much earlier but on checking you're 100% correct.

I'm sure Alex came and managed up north with ICT and Elgin (could well have been ICT under the old guise). If it's who I'm thinking off he was well liked and regarded as a good coach but he also took no nonsense. Welcome aboard Alex, here's hoping you unearth a few more gems for the dark blues.
