Alloa Athletic have confirmed the appointment of Danny Lennon as their new manager.

The news came hours after the Scottish FA announced that the 46-year-old's spell as interim national under-21 coach had come to an end.

The former St Mirren boss has agreed a deal to take charge of the Wasps, who are ninth in the Scottish Championship, until the summer of 2016.

It follows the resignation of Barry Smith on 7 March.

Lennon, who left the Buddies in May 2014, stood in as Scotland Under-21 boss for a 2-1 friendly victory against Hungary following the departure of Billy Stark.

He guided the Paisley side to winning the Scottish League Cup trophy in 2013 - a 3-2 victory over Hearts - which was St Mirren's first silverware since 1987.

However, at the end of the 2013-14 season, his contract was not renewed.

Assistant manager Tommy Craig took charge but was sacked in December.

Paddy Connolly had been interim manager of Alloa, who currently occupy the relegation play-off in the second tier and are two points behind Cowdenbeath in eighth.

Good appointment to be fair.

St Mirren should never have got rid of him. They weren't great but there were surviving. I don't think it's a coincidence that they have crashed without him.

Wouldn't say he is great but still good enough.

Do u think it will be much of a wage drop?

I would guess so, still a job and it gets him back in the shop window. The Alloa owner has pretty high ambitions so maybe pushing the boat out a bit wages wise. Total speculation of course but I do see it as a good signing for Alloa, he sort of lost his way a bit at the end but that happens, over the term he did a good job at St. Mirren.

Better appointment that Smith and a proven manager.

I was actually surprised by this appointment  tbh. I never thought Lennon would have taken this job, maybe I thought this would have been a bit lower than his expectations, but as yo9u say he needed to get himself back in the game and he could have done a lot worse than Alloa I suppose.

While I am surprised at Lennon getting taking this job, I must admit that I was more taken back by the way Smith just quit the post. I didn't think he was doing that badly considering and he should have given himself some more time maybe?

Aye, I thought Barry would stick it out, this season was always going to be an artificial season Championship wise, I don't think there would have been any disgrace being at the bottom end of the table this season. He maybe couldn't be arsed with the hassle and I don't think he needs the money so maybe happy enough to toss it off.  Pity, I was rooting fo him, I'd have liked to see hi doing well.

Tommy Craig's biggest blunder was thinking McGowan was dispensable.

St Mirren won their last three home games with Gowser starting. They failed to any of their next 15 without him.

I think BS would be happy in a coaching role or as an assistant manager, as him leaving Alloa would suggest that maybe he doesn't really want a management role after all. When you take over a part time team you use it to show what you can achieve and use it as a stepping stone and I think that is what Mike Mulraney would have been expecting from the likes of Smith.

I just wonder where that leaves Barry in the future? I'm not sure that he will get another chance at management if he will be perceived as giving up to easy. I do fully expect him to get back into coaching again and it could be with a lower league team.

Ironically, we lost to them 3-1 in December, and guess who wasn't playing that day? Gowser!
