14 Team League Next Season?

Recommended Posts

Been thinking about this a lot today and if The Rangers fail to beat Motherwell in the play off place, I can see a league reconstruction next season.

There is no way that the SFA and the SPFL will have The Rangers sitting in the championship next season, especially with Hibs and St Mirren there, and I can see them fast tracking The Rangers back into the Premier to get a better sponsorship deal with Sky and BT.

Personally, If they done that, every club in the league would know something was happening. Would be uproar!

The existing hand to mouth tv deal that was "negotiated" with SKY during Sevcos demise runs until the end of season 2017 / 2018..

Can't see them increasing the money before then.

I think the Ref's will be briefed before any The Rangers games, as you say the SFA/SP(F)L are absolutely cacking it that they won't be back in the top league. For the 'good of the game'  it will be deemed necessary to have them back. You can understand why, I mean the TV money is just soooooo good, we just 'need' them up there.  :lol2:

In my opinion the SPFL should revert to the 18 club Premier league as soon as possible. Some fans will say that there would be too many "nothing" games towards the end of the season and many answer to that is that at least clubs would be able to "blood" young players in these games which cannot happen at present.

I agree with you Islay, I'd like to see an 18 team league, there's definitely 16 teams that could form a top league and I don't think it would be hard to find another couple of ambitious clubs who would fancy a crack at it. My 'extra' 4 are the 3 obvious ones in the Championship plus Falkirk. I'd go for 2 national leagues then regional below, like a lot of the smaller European countries. The second tier would be mostly semi pro with a smattering of pro teams. Ain't gonna happen though.  :(

Chomp.

I agree with you about regional leagues below the top three leagues. Last week we had the crazy situation of Elgin City at home against Berwick Rangers in an evening game.

I'd make the top 2 leagues regional Islay, rather than 3. I don't think that we've enough teams for 3 16/18 team national leagues.

Yes I agree with that.

I would have the top two divisions of 18 teams each with the bottom six teams in League 2 splitting into two regional leagues on a similar split to the first round of the Challenge Cup (Petrofac Cup) augmented by teams from the Highland League and Lowland League. The regional leagues could also have 18 teams which would mean that the fans would not be bored seeing the same teams at least twice per season.

I would also use the pyramid system which has certainly "spiced up" the bottom of League 2 this season rather than teams in previous seasons just "going through the motions" with no fear of relegation.

Aye, there needs to be a pyramid system, no 'glass ceiling'. I don't have a problem with smaller regional leagues, it would most likely lead to more derbies so more cash and more fans. I see that I'm not applying the same logic to the top 2 leagues but if (and that's a big if at the moment) we get a decent TV deal organised then this could be offset. As it stands I think we're at the top end of bums on seats more or less. Just my tuppence worth of course, more than happy to be proved wrong.
