Club Statement - The Derry

A lot of people, myself included, kicked back when the club started putting in place measures we felt were over-officious to try and stop people siting in their non-designated seats.

It's about knowing your audience though. There is no need for barriers, numerous ticket checks, over zealous stewarding when you are playing Ross County on a Sunday afternoon or Inverness when their 150 fans are in the mainstand. The derby, Celtic, Aberdeen however you need the stewards to be a bit more forceful - however they take the easy option and just sh**e themselves when it comes to these occasions.

It's the same as when Celtic come to town, due to the fact they have a big support, police/stewards just let them run wild and punish the extreme offenders retroactively compared to when the likes of Ayr's support are not even allowed to stand despite pretty much all the Celtic support being allowed.

Correct Ludo, You can bet your bottom dollar when Celtic visit on the 22 nd their support will stand and sing and do whatever in the Shankley with very minimum intervention from Police and stewards,  but as soon as one or two young lads in the Derry stand or try and create an atmosphere etc they will be  ejected,  it will be payback time for a few stewards i suspect.

How am I still alive after all those surge/crushes when standing in the Derry before the stupid benches went in.Over exuberant celebrations have always happened, people spill onto pitchside track, slight injuries occur in the bedlam.Lets all sit like at Perth, zero excitement/atmosphere.The problem now is you allocated a seat,so kids and older folk get caught up in the madness.Solution, give the young guys a safe standing area fenced of from rest Derry, like a mosh pit at gigs, for say 14 year olds and upward, then let them get on with it.Fenced all way round so pitch incursion is stopped too.Radical proposal, but could be done quite cheaply in say third of enclosure.

The Derry has always been like that though, but times are changing and stupid rules brought into the game in the name of safety. Game is becoming too PC like the rest of the country. If it's icy, well throw down some bloody salt rather than closing half the stands down. How did we manage to live in the dark ages back in the 70's?

Stewards were getting severe hassle bordering on assault on Wednesday for trying to do that. Would you put yourself through that for £30 or whatever they get?

Stewards at Dens are well known  for picking on soft target small away supports with their over zealous approach, but when it comes to the bigger clubs with shall we say more  excitable elements they are not  so quick to step in and deal with problems, if they cant stand the heat at certain games then i would suggest that stewarding/ crowd control is not for them

Imo it's the cumulation of numerous issues that have lead to the club having to take this action or be acted upon, probably with a more punitive outcome.

The Derry hasn't met the required standards for years...the access stairs, the type of seating, number of exits, condition of front wall etc. Each one on their own isn't major but the combined condition meant that any additional risks could lead to actions being taken against the club. The additional risks have been caused by the surging, pitch entry etc. This also explains the difference in approach taken In regards to the Coxy and the "pitch invaders".

I'm just relieved the club were able to persuade the powers that be to keep it open at all.
