I looked at the top 2 leagues in Scotland to see who we could sign should we stay in the premiership. I also generally went with younger players.

Tam OBrien Arbroath.

Shaun Rooney Saints

Regan Charles Cook County

Blair Spittal County

Tony watt Motherwell

Zak Rudden Partick

Lewis Smith Accies

Scott Tanser St Mirren

Eamon Brophy St Mirren

Beavis Mugabi Motherwell

Jason naismith killie

Jack Fitzwater Livi

Also Nicky Cadden of forest green.

Some of these might not be possible because their stock would attract bigger clubs and I'm not too sure about some others like Spittal but I think most would do quite well for us.

I would hope we cast our net further afield.

I think there's a bigger risk with foreign players than British based players regards the style of football, the culture and even sometimes the weather. Generally McPake has shopped local with players he's familiar with rather than get trialists in and there's some logic to this approach.

A team like us needs the right characters though, guys who will commit to the cause in training and in games.

Absolutely. We have always had maverick/mercurial types that make headlines and their talent is undoubted, Griffiths/Cummings this season is a perfect example. However, both can't get past Danny Mullen down to sheer hard work and graft. I will say Mullen is a decent player himself tbf, his first touch is sure, for his size he is great in air and is able to physically bully larger players.

But nobody will ever say Mullen is more talented that Griffiths or Cummings but his work ethic is unmatched and you notice when they don't play. Talent is great but it means nothing if you don't put in the work, we need hard workers with the right mind set at the club in the same ilk as Mullen and previously Jim McAlister, further back Steven Boyack is a good example IMO.

Signs are there we are going down that path, Ashcroft, Byrne in previous windows are work horses and will give everything, Byrne in particular is a cracking footballer. I also feel we are actually quite a hardworking team, Saturday was a great example of it all clicking together nicely. So far McCowan and Sweeney seem that way as well which is encouraging.

I have a feeling we could go in for Charles-Cook from County. I don't think we'd get him but he feels very McPake-ish in style and it would maybe be a bit of shithousery that we might try to wind County up with in January.

Charlie Adam is the best I've ever seen at it so think he'd find it a tough step up!
