Are Dfc Fans More Tolerant Of Ph As A Manager ?

Hope Joe wont mind me quoting his post .......  "wonder what it is about Tank that has the most of us "wishing he comes on form" rather than taking the "he's useless!" tack?          Weird, huh?"

And connecting his quote to the above topic.

I should lay my cards on the table right away here. I think Paul Hartley is the best thing that has happened to/for our club in a very long time. It might also be fair to say, my praising comments of him, as a DFC  Manager, have in some of my posts, maybe have been bit over the top. But it does seem most of us see him, as maybe just that bit special.

Comparing him to some of our past managers, and even some of the other managers around the country, it is easy to see why.

Because of this, and maybe my own particular bias, I will admit I am inclined, not to cricise him, as I might have done some of the DFC managers of the past ....... even when at times, it may be justified.

Another reason for this is because I see him as a total professional. Ambitious for himself, and I believe our club. And with this, and his many other attributes (imo) his approach to all things football is never hap-hazzard .....Always appears, to me anyway, to be working to a plan.

Maybe the praise I level towards him, is justified. Or should I/we be more critical ?

Or is it ok to be maybe a bit more tolerant, because generally, (unlike some managers) he knows what he is doing ?

I think most of us can see what he is trying to achieve and are more than willing to give him a bit of leeway, especially due to our present position.  He obviously has a 'plan' and I doubt it's been written on the back of a fag packet.  Being Dundee though don't be surprised when we go on another winless run (because we will) and the 'Hartley isn't the messiah' begin again.

Some of the football we are playing compared with the one dimensional stuff of the last few years, is a joy.

When you combine his workrate, professionalism, the squad he has assembled and the, in general, good play and results for the team it is no wonder he is being praised and given a bit of slack when the results don't go our way.

Last Friday he went to Glasgow to watch the Scotland game, went down to Ayr to check out the performance of Cammy Kerr for Peterhead then travelled up to Aberdeen to be guest of honour at the Aberdeen Dark Blues 30th anniversary dinner. That is commitment to his profession, and talking to him at the dinner you realised he lives and breathes football. He gets Tommy Young to download the footage of the game just played and he watches the first half on the bus on the way back to Dundee and spends Sunday night watching the whole game in preparation to taking the players through the footage on the Monday.

Hello Double Blue .......All three responses to date on this topic are, for me anyway, right on the mark. And none more so than yours.

I like to kid a'body on, I am a lazy auld git !! But the truth of the matter is I am, and always have been ......... a hard worker.

And when I see any one of a similiar mould, be it an ordinary man/woman like myself, a player, or in this case, a manager, I quite honestly simply cannae criticise him/her.

All of us can only give our all. And if the best is better than others (eg PH) well that is an extra blessing and bonus.   We are lucky to have him !!

I agree with most if not all that been said. For me, and i know this sounds crazy I'm really looking forward to see what he does next season. Who he keeps, how will he strengthen the team? What kind of player will he target??

Of course I'm getting carried away and this is on the proviso we secure a place in the SPL but its exciting times at Dens.

Surely folk can see this and if we do happen to have a wee blip i really hope fans don't start giving him a hard time. We are heading in the right direction and providing we can keep him things are looking good..

I think we will see more changes the start of next season. I wouldn't be surprised if a good few players are let go.

I could see Kyle Benedictus, Gary Irvine, Iain Davidson, Jim McAlister, Kevin McBride, Peter MacDonald and maybe see some players loaned out.

The man's workrate is obvious to see.

And he doesn't fill the local rag with garabge.

That alone makes him stand out!

Pretty refreshing to have a managers 'manager' for a change!

I don't want to take anything away from PH who I agree has been a breath of fresh air but he has had a bit more backing from the Board than any manager I can recall in recent years (a good thing of course) and this is a part of my niggling concern. If for any reason our backers change their minds or even just decide to take some money out of the club (for example sell Craig Wighton) then all of the current good work could well go down the  pan. We're not unique in this situation of course and I'm probably just being a bit paranoid after our last couple of 'little mishaps' but we are spending a fair bit behind the scenes apparently.

I would like to think that this current board are now actually running the club in a business professional manner compared to anything we have had in the last 40 years (i blame Tommy Gemmell lol).

As far as I can see and hear, they're trying to put all the things that have been missing from a professional club back into place. For a start, bringing in a young manager who knows how to manage, training facilitates and youth development. We are not spending out-with our budget and the wages seem to be in-line with the premiership and we are not spending vast amount of money on transfer fees.

But.. Time will tell, too many times have we been let down and you're just waiting on the bubble bursting.. :(
