I really think for the first time that McPake played a blinder with his tactical and formation change. It didn't get us the result but it seen us ramp up the pressure in a way I've not seen under a McPake led team before.

McGinn was crucial to that. Allowed McCowan to come on hungry to prove something and with his trickery against some tired legs we created a few chances.

I'd do that sort of switch from the 4-3-3 formation to the 4-4-2 again mid game.

The devil is in the detail.

However, i get the fear whenever we start with more than one up front which thankfully isnt often.

Please don't tell the facebook da's on me.

Why the fear?

If we are only playing 1 up it has to be Rudden, Mullen is hopeless in that roll, loads of effort yes, but hardly ever looks like scoring

Agree, he can hold the ball in and wait. Mullen doesn't have the physical presence to keep it while waiting.

If we are only playing one up front then the midfield 3 need to be closer to them quicker. We need to win games which means scoring goals.

That's the issue. They can't be. Charlie can't get up the pitch and Bryne isn't that player.

Our transition is so so poor. Almost sloppy. That needs to change.

I don’t think we can start with the traditional 4-4-2, I don’t feel we have the players for it over the course of a 90. It is a bit of a relic, but most modern formations are based on its principles tbf. It is still arguably the best formation for covering space if you have the players for it which means McGinn and Adam can’t start as they don’t have the legs, possibly Byrne (as mad as that sounds) as he is not the quickest, but he could make up for that with his positional sense and in fairness he was outstanding throughout the game on Tuesday despite it only being his second game in 3/4 months.

On Tuesday after McGinn and Adam went off, we went 4-4-2, probably, more like 4-4-1-1 with Rudden and Mullen switching dropping off. The energy that McCowan, McGhee and Rudden had along with McMullan / Anderson still having their legs and Mullen being a pest, totally overwhelmed Utd and they were ridiculously lucky not to concede one or two during that spell for us. Sadly, that wasn’t sustainable and after 15 minutes we couldn’t capitalise. To that nugget Courts credit, he did something about it and nullified it for the last 10 minutes with his changes and coupled with our legs going they finally did something in our half.

Agree with @Ludo*1, 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 then potential switch to 4-4-2 to ramp up the pressure. But it means our defence will have to a bit more work while we push on but it has got that stage already that we have no choice but to go all out for games as we are running out of time.

I was talking about the midfield 3 not the sitting 2 so McMullan, McGinn etc.

4 2 3 1 will be our routine option given who McPake signed and let go in January.

The formation on paper isn't so important, it's how the transitions are operated which really matter.

A 4 2 3 1 can become anything quite easily. Our problem is it stays rigid and there doesn't appear to be any rehearsed options going forward. It's basically give the ball to Charlie to pick out the passes. Which he can do, but we're not getting anywhere near the best out of his passing range because our set up is, frankly, poor. Through balls are not possible for example if your main striker is backed in against the centre half and your wide men are level with the ball.

IMO we are not scoring goals because we don't commit enough players into advanced areas at the right time. It really looks like a random mess. Or a fear of committing players to get forward because we are not set up properly to recover possession in the breakdown.

That 10 minute spell where we got behind united was similar to what we did to Motherwell at Dens. Pushing up and pressing higher allowing players to get forward and wide and occupying the centre halves.

We could only sustain it for a short period however because we don't have the stamina. This is a cliche usually levelled at struggling teams, but I really do consider our fitness to be well short of what's required in this league. Hartley was the last manager to really have us in good strength and condition.
