Haven't posted on here for a while, but agree with most if not all that GordonDee says here. Pretty underwhelmed like many with McGee announcement but will get behind him like I've done with every manager and see how it goes. But have felt more apathy towards the club over the last 9 months that I can remember for a long time after the highs of the playoffs,  but there have been worse times in my lifetime and a few good results will turn the feeling around for a bit at least, but there will be little or no honeymoon period with this appointment. However, despite the timing of the change being odd (and like many, I desperately wanted to see McPake succeed), being a decent guy and committed to the club is simply not enough to continue as our manager, and after watching the 1st half of the Peterhead game and how much we were outplayed, it was clear despite the win, that this had run its course and a change was still needed. Unfortunately, visionary appointments like Steve Clarke to Killie give us continual hope that we may land lucky eventually with a change, and I still believe we have a core of players that can be game changers this season in Adam, McGinn and McMullan, plus Rossi hasn't been the bomb scare that he looked in the playoffs, so who knows (but was only Peterhead where we have seen him so far...). But we are crying out for better coaching, some kind of consistent game plan and style of play  and something better than hoping the ball eventually lands at Charlies feet and some magic occurs or McMullan flukes a cross into someones path. Keep the faith and hope the frustrated but loyal dees find a way to get back on board.

I have had all day to think about this, listened to McGhee's interview and reflected on our previous manager and our season.

Here is what I resolved my thoughts to be:

  • IMO we would be relegated under McPake
  • We have been outplayed in nearly every game this season
  • We have seen some of the worst results this season, getting beat 5-0 at home to Ross County was probably the lowest I have felt as a Dee
  • Tactically we are very very poor, our formation is suspect and we are not getting the best out of the players we have
  • We just struggled against a lower level 1st division team and although we won were largely outplayed
  • We will no longer have the managers pals being played whether they are performing or not
  • We have a chance of sorting our central defense out, we must prevent these battering that kill confidence
  • When the chips are down we always seem to fail - getting outplayed and beat again at Dens by Ross County showed McPake did not learn
  • If I resolve that we were going to be relegated, makes not difference whether it is under McPake or McGhee
  • There will be new tactics, new formations- the hope is we improve
  • I am unhappy with McGhee but will support him just as I did with McIntire,McCann or McPake
  • McGhee will only be here for 12 games unless he keeps us up and even then we can still make a change

Good positive post.

I suppose most folk are not saying McGhee is a not better option than McPake, rather we allowed ourselves to be built up to expect a Ross/Lennon/Lambert.

Let's see.

You make very valid points. For the majority of games Dundee are tactically inept and no more so against Peterhead where the scoreline flattered them. Teams like Ross County, Livingston and St. Mirren can play the Glasgow two and still cause them difficulties whereby Dundee are blown away from start to finish. Under James McPake , I feel Dundee would finish in 12th position and although surprised and perturbed at the appointments I think that it is a gamble worth taking.

The problem for most of us is not that McPake was fired - that was needed and overdue - but that we had a chance to get someone significantly better in based on media reports etc and ended up with McGhee.

Kinda like binning your old banger and looking at a BMW as a replacement and ending up with a Fiesta. The realisation that we are in that market is a reality check.

Yes I'm not disagreeing with you at all. It would have been better to get a higher profile person in but it would have to be now. It wouldn't have been advantageous to put in an interim team (although that may be the case!) until we get the right candidate. Media reports indicate that other possibilities were sounded out but obviously came to nothing. I feel they should have appointed Jim Goodwin when they had they had the chance. I like your analogy but glad you didn't say an Astra!

Not many managers would be willing to have a relegation on the cv which could easily happen with us only a point above bottom spot. The timing of it with the window shut would reduce this list even more so.

Mcghee has over 1000 games as coach/manager and will get my backing.

I have a good feeling about this.We have some decent players. The problem has been playing them out of position/ever changing and inept team formations/repeated incompetent substitutions .We can be assured that the new manager will not fall into the trap of thinking he can outsmart the opposition by playing 3 wingers or players on the wrong side of the pitch .You can be sure that this manager will play to the strengths of our players not their weaknesses with cohesion and understanding between players. They are not world beaters but they have enough quality to beat the bottom 8 teams in this League often enough to survive.I look forward to the rest of the season with a sportsmans relish .And why does everyone think we will suffer a backlash on Sunday.?That is what ignorant news reporters come out with. Its not true. You get what you work for.
