Question Time.

Recommended Posts

I was having a think at work today about DFC and the mangers down the years..four questions came to mind.. I have a few answers but wondered if other punters could come up with a few too.. (I think the answer to question 1 is, not many)

1. Which Dundee managers have gone on to managing bigger clubs?

2. Which Dundee managers didn't have any managerial experience before getting the Dens Park gig?

3. Which Dundee managers never managed again after leaving the club?

4. This is a sort of amalgamation of questions 2 and 3. Who came in with no experience of management and, has never gotten another gig after resigning or being punted?

The vast majority of managers in my lifetime have been ex players, most of which didn't have any managerial experience first time around here - Jocky, Duffy, McCormack, Wallace, Smith, Chisholm, Brown, McCann, McPake

Other than that it has sometimes been managers that have come into a player/manager role - Ivano, Alex Rae

We have a very poor record of looking outside the club for managers and when we do they usually don't last very long.

Archie Knox and Donald McKay would be the last managers that went on to any sort of success away from Dens.

We have a terrible record when it comes to managers. Constantly going back to manager's who in all honesty failed the first time around, players who have never managed before because he is one of our own or managers that no one has ever heard or and will ever hear of again.

Why do we constantly do the same thing over and over and then expect different results?

Gordon Wallace managed Raith for 5yrs before he managed Dundee.

Jim Duffy managed Falkirk.

Gordon Chisholm managed Utd & QOS.

being a bit controvertial(sp) one of our worst managers in our recent history was Bonetti...the amount of pretend money he had at his disposal and the players he had we got a 6th place finish and celebrated it like we'd won the cup.

He was one of the worst, but some folk think these days were great.

i believe we are where we are due to that period in time..im sure the season before jocky had us 5th with a majority of the players being scottish ...the 20 years since then has just been one lowlight after another.

Good to see you back posting Rev

McCormack, Smith, McCann, McPake, Bonetti, Rae all had no managerial experince, most of them were given the job because they were a cheap option that some Dundee fans would accept due to their playing careers.

Wallace managed lower league Raith, Duffy lower league Falkirk, again cheap option ex players that the support would hopefully accept.

Of the managers above McCann has been the most successful since leaving Dens........at Sky Sports.

I do think Chisholm and Dodds could have been successful at Dens if circumstances were different.
