Nelms Courier Interview Part 2

Recommended Posts

Cards on table - as a fan I have, like many others, reached an unprecedented low ebb this season. I read the recent "open letter" (Paddy Barclay et al) with a sense of empathy...and a glimmer of hope. Here was a voice from fellow fans articulating the types of concern I have and which I have discussed with fellow Dark Blues.

I read the second part of John Nelms interview with George Cran in a state of bewilderment.  It would appear that my concerns and the concerns of the "open letter" group are unfounded. Everything in the Dundee FC garden is apparently rosy.

Er, sorry Mr Nelms. It won't wash with me. It won't, I suspect, wash with the fans I talk to on a daily basis.

If everything in the Dundee FC garden is rosy I'll add another few questions (yes, I now know these should be channelled through the DSA or the SLO before they'll even be acknowledged,  let alone have a chance of being answered but here they are anyway....)

Why do I struggle to remember the last time I looked forward to a Dundee FC game with eager anticipation rather than a sense of "duty" or force of habit?

When was the last time I saw Dundee FC trounced 0-5 at home versus the Scottish football giants of Ross County (er, I'll answer that one myself - it was NEVER).

When was the last time I saw Dundee FC trounced 0-4 at home versus the Scottish football giants of Livingston (er, I'll answer that one myself too - it was NEVER).

When was the last time I thought..."Dundee FC season ticket purchase....nah, no thanks"......

If Mr Nelms truly thinks things are generally positive and that the club continues on some sort of upward trajectory I fear he's in for a rude awakening come renewal time.

Or, forum folk, am I living in The Twilight Zone?

Part 3 invited the open letter group to apply to be next SLO so hopefully one of them will do it

Doesn’t fix any of the fundamental issues, we had a SLO in place for years with no output.

sorry there aren’t any issues, all is good.

I agree, Every year I’m badgering the club for ST going on sale - I’m not even sure I’ll bother this year, if the club don’t value their support then what’s the point. Scunnered with it all and I know I’m not alone, just need to look around my seat at Dens to see regulars that have lost the habit…

no one is saying there aren't issues.

You wanted some form of representation and there is an offer of some.

Maybe worth mentioning that in the space of 11 months a few years ago, our neighbours lost 5-1 to County, 5-0 to Ayr (both at home) and 6-1 to bottom placed Falkirk. All in the 2nd tier.

These results are horrific. But they can happen. We need to move on.

Tend to agree on that, the results on the pitch shouldn’t dictate feeling about the running of the club. My concerns have been around for years, amplified by others recently and lack of accountability IMO coming from club

The same representation we have always had but a new person. Hopefully the new SLO can take the role and make a fist of it and be visible and make a difference.

still leaves the fans without the x2 reps per AoA and initial promised to maintain from FPS. Fans rep on board isn’t the be all and end all for me but it drives some accountability

To me John Nelms comes across as arrogant, and it is only because the fans unhappiness of how things are being run at the club has come out in the press that he has reacted, although only piecemeal so far.

I applaud what the fans groups have done in flushing him out as even shareholders no longer have a platform to ask questions since they no longer have an AGM or a Q&A.

If the open letter boys take up the SLO post they can shape it the way they want. Isn't it an olive branch that should be grabbed? You'll do more good on the inside than out

The fans rep on the board thing is something Dee4Life need to be pushing / discussing with the board and should absolutely be the case but to do that they need to actually go in to the room with Nelms and have had two offers recently.

Maybe one of the open letter boys could get Dee4Life to put their name forwarded for it. be easy to do - co-opt them onto Dee4Life board and nominate them to club and enforce it through the AoA you mention.

There are opportunities here for representation you asked for and you just need to grab them

If John Nelms says 'jump' some fans will just ask 'how high'?

Last thing we need in any role that communicates with John Nelms is one of them so if any of the guys that wrote the letter are up for the SLO role I'd hope they take it and I hope they make a job of it and don't just meekly accept what's thrown at them.

Probably worth mentioning that I now fully realise clubs suffer bad results. I never realised that before, despite being a Dee for 40 years. And yes, of course I realise we'd all be happier if we weren't languishing at the foot of the table. However, I think you're missing the bigger issue here.........
