The exit of midfielder Kevin McBride is set to be just the start of a mass summer exodus at Dens Park.

A further 12 bodies could well be shown the Dundee exit door between now and June as Paul Hartley oversees yet another transfer window overhaul.

The manager had hinted earlier this year that this summer was set to be a quiet one, with just a few ins and outs. But as time wears on it looks more and more likely that the Dark Blues will again be one of the more active clubs in the transfer window north of the border.

Over the course of the last 12 months or so, more than 20 players have come into Paul’s squad, some from as far afield as Bulgaria. And suggestions were that similar movement this summer was unlikely, with the club keen to get their business done early. They’ve certainly been busy to date, having signed Daryll Meggatt, Rory Loy and Nicky Low on pre-contract agreements.

But the departure of the dozen or so others, out of contract at the end of the month, will leave the squad light.

Veteran midfielder McBride, released from his deal after protracted contract-severing talks which have stretched back to January, was the first. But he’s not expected to be the last to face the axe.

There’s no suggestion talks about new deals will not take place with those without a contract — including key first XI regulars Gary Irvine and Jim McAlister — but, as things stand, it’s believed no conversations have taken place with the club about those whose futures are up in the air.

Just 16 players are contracted for next season, including the trio already signed up, and it’s unlikely the manager will run with what he has got. In fact, the Tele understands the manager has his eye on five new faces, all of whom he’d liked tied up before the club go away for their customary pre-season fitness camp.

Meanwhile, this week the Dark Blues are expected to confirm their contract offers to kid Matty Allan as well as first-team breakthrough midfielders Andy Black and Calvin Colquhoun.

That’s not expected to be the last activity at Development League level, though, with a number of youth prospects, some from England, having been earmarked by the club’s coaching staff.
