Memories of a Timelord....

Recommended Posts

Reading the thread about when people were born.. reminded me of things that no longer exist on a Saturday afternoon..

such as sneaky ins.. kids hanging about the ground asking random adults to sneak them in..

The Sporting Post.. the earliest edition only had the scores up to half time.. My favourite remembered headline was after the game when we beat the dayglo ones 6-4.. "Dundee hit Hoodoo For Six" in fact we let them off the hook and it should have been ten.. they scored when we stopped caring.. Shout out for Dixon Hawke!

Punters coming in for the last ten of fifteen minutes when the gates were opened to let people out..

Transfer from the Provie Road end to the enclosure through a small turnstile at the end of the stand.. 6d it cost as I remember.

walking round from one end to the other at half time.. no segregation which, when either one of the twin cheeks were in town, wasn't so great. I remember my mate getting punched in the face by a an Orc  for having the audacity to be wearing a Dundee Scarf. We were in our early teens ..said Orc was a grown man. Some things never change.

Warm ups consisted of teams doing a bit of shooty in and that was it.

A wee boy dressed in a Dundee Kit coming out of the crowd in the enclosure to hand Thompson Allen a silver foil covered piece of cardboard shaped like the Scottish Cup before cup games.. I'm sure that happened a few times...

The same season we won the League Cup.. storming through the Scottish cup in front of large crowds.. Beating Aberdeen away, Drawing with Hibs at Easter road 3-3 (perhaps the best game of football I've ever witnessed) 30,000 in Dens for the Weds night replay where we spanked them 3-0.. Beating the Orcs at Mordor 3-0 in front of 60,000... An grown man Rangers fan in front of us (My dad had treated us to the main stand) being consoled  by his Orcess wife... sweet to watch (apparently they have human emotions.. who would have thought?).. unfortunately Celtic awaited in our now traditional close defeat at their hands in a semi final..

Late sixties/ early seventies.. thinking Euro games were a common thing at Dens..

How we've fallen since..

I'm sure other punters on here can add to the list of bygone elements of watching the Dee on a Saturday ..

You got have written that post for me Napper. The only other things I would add are the two epic European games in the 70s against Cologne and AC Milan.

Coming off the 1B bus for night games, up the Provie steps and into the light and noise. Magic. Also the Satan DFC graffiti all over the place.

I've tried to explain to my lads the magic of going up the Provie Road steps at floodlit games and seeing the greener than green pitch under the lights.  You had to be there I suppose.
