I think there are similarities in the type of player that both have targeted. Both have generally gone for younger players with something to prove and often lower league.

I think I'm right in saying Archie signed:

McCormack st mirren

Rafferty Motherwell

Brown accies

Connor Ayr

Carson Dumbarton

Forsyth Arbroath

Harvey hibs

Waddell Norwich

Docherty ?

Duffy Morton

Mennie cologne

Duff, bomber, Connor were excellent; McCormack, Harvey, Carson, Forsyth were decent and the rest poor.

Hartley:

Bain, mcpake, McGowan, Stewart have been excellent

P. McGinn, konrad, Thomson, Clarkson, Harkins, tankulic have been decent

Gadz, ferry, Harris, Roberts have been poor.

Pretty even imo.

Knox by a mile at the moment.

TBH there is barely a comparrison.

The fact that the manager is lookinf for turn over of about 10 in and outs would suggest he would agree

Duffy Connor Brown and Rafferty alone are ahead of anything we have on our books right now

Knox was unlucky in that he put that team together when you had the old firm plus Fergie and MacLeans team plus a good hearts side (ie these 3 clubs best ever sides)

There is nothing near that standard at the in SPL today and we are a fair but behind a poor top 5

Understand why you would ask but 1985 side is miles behind class of 2015😞

Carson and Harvey mair than decent, did he not sign walker mccall and Derek mcwilliams as well.

Pretty even?????

Duffy, Connor and Brown are three of the best players I have ever seen in a Dundee shirt and would get into my all time fantasy Dundee 11. Not one of the players we have in todays squad would get a game never in the 1980s for any team in the premier league. As was discussed on this forum elsewhere on the worst players Vince Mennie would be the star of the team if you got a time machine and dropped him into 2015. Roberts, Harris and Boyle couldn't lace his boots, Stuart Rafferty and Cowboy McCormack would be in or near the scotland squad and stuart forsyth was a better defender than his son who has international caps. The fact that team couldn't come close to winning anything shows how good sides like Aberdeen, Hearts, Celtic, Dunded Utd and a poor Rangers side were.

Comparing McPake to Duffy, Connor to Stewart or Bomber to McGowan is just silly.

Rafferty and cowboy weren't great players and there is no way they'd be anywhere near Scotland and Craig is a better player than his dad imo.

Got to say I agree duff and broon were miles better than mcpake and McGowan although I'd rather Stewart than Connor.

Standards were much better generally in 85 so it's difficult to compare like for like but there are similarities there.

P.s. McCall and McWilliams were pish as was mennie.

Duffy, McCormack, Forsyth, Brown, Rafferty, Connor and Harvey would walk into the current Dundee side.

If you add, Bain, Paul McGinn,  Thomson  and Stewart from the current squad, then that would make a pretty tasty eleven.

McWilliams scored in a winning derby so gets pass marks, great celebration as well, wild enuf to gee a stadium manager a stroke.

I think if you would play rafferty or cowboy v scott brown they would at least hold their own and rafferty would run the legs off him.

Bobby Connor could play in any team in any generation he was classy on the ball for Dundee and then Aberdeen. I couldn't see Stewart get a transfer to aberdeen now never mind the trophy winning Aberdeen teams of the 1980s

If you added Bobby Geddes, Rab Shannon, Ray Stephen, Tosh McKinlay and Colin Hendry to that side it would be tasty I wouldn't pick one of the players we have now ahead of any of that team.

Connor was class however in terms of effectiveness Stewart is the better player imo. I think the sheep would totally take Stewart if they could afford him.

Scott Brown is miles better than cowboy or raff mate.

Agree with Clearwater although I'd have tosh at left back.

Scottish teams were able to compete with the best in Europe in the 80s so standards are obviously not the same but I think Hartley is maybe the best manager we've had in terms of player recruitment since Knox.
