Courier Sport understands there is no rush at Dens Park to appoint Mark McGhee’s successor, with the start of pre-season training still a month away.

The playing squad broke up for the summer following a meeting with managing director John Nelms and technical director Gordon Strachan on Monday.

In it, the pair set out their plans for the team in the Championship next season.

Strachan has taken on a more active role in first-team matters over the past few weeks and will guide the Dark Blues’ on-pitch approach going forward.

As a result, with outline plans already in place, the search for McGhee’s successor need not be rushed.

It is understood Dundee are currently in the process of putting together a shortlist of candidates.

That will be whittled down over the coming days, meaning it could be into next week before the club’s preferred candidate is known.

The bookies have installed Strachan’s son Gavin as early favourite to take the job at Dens Park.

The former midfielder had a loan spell with Dundee at the start of his playing career and is currently a first-team coach at Celtic.

However, Courier Sport understands he is not being considered for the role.

Among the other early favourites with the bookies are former St Mirren, Sunderland and Hibs boss Jack Ross, who almost took the job in 2017, as well as former Dees Kevin Thomson and Darren O’Dea.

Thomson recently led Kelty Hearts to the League Two title while former centre-back O’Dea coaches Celtic’s U/18s. Both played under Strachan during their careers.

Dundee skipper Charlie Adam is also among the runners and riders after he stated his desire to step into management beyond this summer.

Current Dens assistant manager Dave Mackay ruled himself out of the running on Sunday.

Don't the club want to bring in a manager sooner so he can have input re players to keep, and new ones to bring in before other clubs start doing the same, or are those roles now going to be down Strachan and the new manager will purely be coaching the players he is given?

As far as "players to keep" goes then that's not really an issue. Everyone who's out of contract will be released. Everyone else who's under contract can be assessed as and when we appoint a new manager. I'd guess maybe 1 or 2 will be offered pay-off's but that isn't a priority right now. Lawlor is pish so whoever comes in I'm sure (or hope🙏) will recognise that but then Jakubiak, whilst inconsistent, has talent but divides opinion. Incoming players could be a problem but then WGS could be heading up recruitment or identifying/contacting potential targets in the interim and the new manager will have to either work with what he has or move on to his own preferred players. As we know signings don't happen overnight so as long as we register at least an interest then I'm sure we'll not miss out on too much.
