In 1922/23, Dundee finished 7th in the First Division. Davie McLean had a hell of a start to the season. He scored 21 goals in 17 games by November.

Dundee Hibs weren't in the Scottish League that season. Instead they played in the Scottish Alliance League alongside Dundee reserves. The Dee's reserves beat the non-league dabs 6-1 at home and 3-0 away.

At the end of the season, Dundee would travel abroad for the first time for a tour of Spain. Athletic Bilbao were the first opposition and 10,000 watched the Dee stroll to a 3-0 victory.

After facing Bilbao twice, Dundee travelled to the Spanish capital. In only the second match to take place at Real Madrid's new 22,500 capacity Estadio Charmartin, the Dee ran out 2-0 winners with Davie Halliday getting his second brace of the tour.

There's an interesting article on the official about Dundee's Spanish tours of 1923 and 1924.

Do you mean Dons beating Real to win the Cup Winners Cup?

cannot get my head around a Scottish team winning the Spanish Cup

Motherwell have the Copa Del Rey in their trophy cabinet. The only team outside Spain to have won it.

Curiously, the year Motherwell won the Copa Del Rey, in 1927, was the only year an English didn't win the FA Cup, as Cardiff won it.

The Cardiff City team that won the final 1-0 included ex Dees Sam Irving and Hugh Ferguson who scored the winner.
