The Reason We Had Two Strikers

Recommended Posts

Absolute negligence from John Nelms coming to the fore again.

It's been speculated that McPake had his hands tied with the January window as Nelms was away at the start of the window (and again later on during it).

Is it any wonder we had a disastrous window when the most important month of our season, Nelms had went on a holiday? It says in the article it was club business but it was the rugby in Italy he went to.

The Kyle Lafferty sliding doors moment as Kilmarnock star could have joined Dundee if James McPake had his way - Daily Record

Dundee is just a plaything to Nelms and Keys.

If Nelms is going to leave the country at the end of a critical transfer window surely the least he can do is be on call 24/7 to approve a season-defining transfer.

A DoF wouldn't be in charge of finances so doubt that would have helped.

Lafferty's 9 goals from the end of January led to five huge victories at Rugby Park to send Killie up.

Sorry but couldn’t wait a few days until we heard back from the idiot nelms, looks to me he was going to killie no matter what we did, that’s just my take on the matter

I mean, if two clubs wanted me and one told me that we'd need to wait a few days for the director to bother his arse to sign off on it whilst the other club were desperate for my signature, it'd certainly sway my thought process!

He was away the first week of the window as well and whilst it was smoothed over as nothing at the time, it meant that McPake couldn't even finalise his targets until well after other clubs had started making moves.

Sounds like McPake did the hard part and persuaded a quality striker to sign for us before Nelms managed to fuck things up by creating doubt and giving McInnes the chance to keep the player in Ayrshire.

I think the key thing is it could be another layer of decision making at a level equating to Nelms who is answerable to the ownership rather than working under same constraints and with the same amount of knowledge as the first-team manager.

Once the email goes in, Nelms probably wants to know what this is actually costing (which may take a bit of work if it's still a wee bit grey) and make sure the cash flow stuff is going to be OK. Maybe there are losses to be covered and it's a case that others need to be involved. Pushing budget will always need thinking over as it's a budget for a reason.

The first team manager can't often speak that language as they are too busy worried about football. Someone reporting in a role above management who is contributing to these discussions may also get a lot more autonomy and trust to make calls themselves.

I think this is precisely how a DoF could help Harry.

The football department will be assigned a budget and it's the remit DoF and manager/head coach to work within that budget. The DoF should be able to put together a deal in principle then present the headline/bottom line to Nelms in the event it needs him to sign off on it without the manager/head coach and Nelms having to go back and forth working through the minutiae.

The story as it appeared in The Scottish Sun has Strachan having control over playing budget:

"Strachan’s first-team role will now be formalised as Director of Football, with control of all playing department matters falling at his feet.

In addition to appointing the long-term gaffer, Strachan will also have control of the playing budget and oversight over recruitment."

Assuming that's correct then in that respect the DoF will have a degree of control over finances.
