Do You Remember When Snooker On Tv Was A "must Watch" ?

Apologies to the posters on here, who found the game boring.

But those who had a lively interest in the game, will I'm sure, remember with delight and excitement, when snooker on TV had some of us glued to our tv sets away past midnight.

Alex Higgins, Jimmy White, Steve Davis, Stephen Hendry, and many, many more. This is a list that could go on forever and ever. ( Apologies for leaving so many great, honest players out )

As i said, there were loads of great players who produced some real class snooker. But if I was looking for Scottish players to follow, Hendry, Mcmanus, and John Higgins were the guys, I was always rooting for.

But it is also John Higgins, who totally ruined it for me. I never thought I would ever want to see a Scottish man get beat.

But when he is playing ....... whoever he is playing ..... I want to see him thrashed !!

Many will rememember when he was involved in a "sting" on camera. And no' only was he quite willing to "throw" a game for money, he was bragging about, what he could do with all this money he was being offered. I think he said on camera, he could buy another villa somewhere.

When it was revealed to him it was a sting, he embarrrassingly said, he thought it was, but he was also scared, so went along with it.

...........AND THAT IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST REASONS, SNOOKER IS NO LONGER A "MUST WATCH" FOR ME !!

I think the problem with snooker on TV no is that it has (again) become too successful financially.

The money they are playing for is now WAY beyond that which it used to be played for.

Hence, fewer risks are taken, and the game becomes too clinical... and dull.

(Which is why player like Ronnie O'Sullivan are so well known... he *does* take risks and plays a more exciting game.)

Aye Joe, I think you're right.

And you are bang on about O'Sullivan, he, for me anyway, is one player I can still watch, knowing he will put up a good show.

Alex Higgins of course had more than his fair share of personal problems. But again, he was a real crowd pleaser, and one man you could watch, knowing you could expect the unexpected.......Sad to watch him towards the end, when he was literally a shadow of his former self.

(If you equate this thread with the one about the one I started, about the personalities of old, on the football field, it may well be the same thing)

And the cheating aspect in snooker I referred to, is now prevalent in every sport it seems ....... the quest for more and more money never ends.

........ (edited it to say) ..........not all sports men/women.           Probably a very small percentage.

"And for those watching in black and white.."

A dull tv spectacle these days only saved by R O'S. I've noticed recently there are a lot of tournaments held in China and the far east. Must be where the money is.

I stopped watching snooker after hurricane Higgins retired....... Snooker got boring then!

Only man I know that played snooker with a rocket up his a** and 4lbs of cocaine up his nose...... ( I'm not sure about the rocket though ;) )

Dae ye no' think the poor man had enough to contend with without adding that extra burden.

And I cannae really say I noticed ........ Unless that experience happened, once the cameras stopped running, and the gemme wis ower !!

lol I speaking literal not figuratively... but yes, I think the poor man had enough problems with the snooker blazer jackets, without adding this one to his long list of improprieties!

Always remember during a game that Hurricane had played and won the match at that point, then he was left on a black, played it and it missed. (frame over already) without batting an eye he dropped his cue to the white ball, hit it while the black was still hurtling round the table, and SLAMMED the black into a pocket!

If it was a fluke, it was the greatest fluke the world has ever seen!  :D

Haven't watched the game for years but I used to love turning on the snooker in the 1980s. The flamboyant Jimmy White against the ice cool Steve Davis, the charismatic underdog Dennis Taylor, Kirk Stevens with his white suits, Alex Higgins losing the plot, Bill Werbeniuk necking 10 pints during a match. Great stuff.

I remember running back from school loads to watch snooker or darts games on TV. To be honest, I'd watch any sport religiously if it was televised enough.

I'm only in my early twenties so it's not the same era as others are talking about. Can't seem to get the same enjoyment out of watching sport these days. Probably happens to everyone in life though.
