What went wrong with the last few managers?

Recommended Posts

Neil McCann signed either very good or absolutely shite players. For every Kamara there were 2 Ngwatala's.

He also refused to change the build from the back style even though we didn't have the players for it. We never went long so oppo defences could squeeze up knowing the ball was never going in behind.

He was also a huffy c*nt on occasion.

Mcintyre was a disaster. He got rid of our best player and replaced him with either injured or loan players of little ability. He also tried to bring the rat with him to assist.

McPake signed too many old, slow, unfit players which was never going to work in the premiership.

Mcghee spoke utter shite and gave the team an excuse not to win. As everyone bar JN and WGS suspected he was a total disaster.

The outstanding candidate for me is Tommy Wright who was brilliant for saintees but he won't get the gig because he's perceived as a bit of a bampot.

Not sure about TW Wattie. He may be the man for the job as you say. Just not sure nowadays about anyone, even Ross. Punch drink I guess . But agree with your post . We could get far worse than Tommy Wright.

i suspect that I, along with many others  and not just on here,  now expect a failure as it’s down to John Nelms. He has an awful lot of ground to make up for me to change my view.

Simples. Look for the common denominator in ALL 5 previous and current managerial appointments. Answers on a postcard please, (Dens Park or USA.addresses accepted.)

P.S. If I failed an exam 5 times, I would know I'd not studied enough - unless I was really thick.

Apart from the appointments themselves every manager was there own worse downfall and only have themselves to blame. Each and everyone of them (McGhee as the exception) was well backed in the transfer windows. However each manager had a way they wanted to play, the problem was they didn’t have the players to play that way and continued to sign like for like replacements. Each was also very stubborn and seemed to refuse to change there approach. Bizarrely McPake after January did look to change and adapted his team formation and selection to suit the opponent and started to put a we run of results together. It was only after that wee upturn was he given the bullet which sums up the travelling circus that we are!!!

In a perverse kinda way there's little reason for JN to shell out big money on a decent manager as the bar is set very low ATM and he's likely to be judged on his past failures anyway. He'll, imo, get the cheapest reasonable manager possible and then disappear and leave them to it.

In all honesty, I still think McCann could have been a good manager for us.

First year, we played some nice stuff but when we needed results and weren't getting points on the board, he went more physical and direct.

Year two, there was no O'Hara and he recruited 100% around his philosophy. That meant that when first half of the season went bad, plan B was very hard. No real physique between strikers and centre backs, technical players he'd signed just weren't ready.

I think he sold himself to the club on a lot of development promises and sells ons but it was just far too ambitious at once.

If the likes of Nabi, Madianga, N'Gwatala, Mendy, Kallman etc were maybe coming into an established squad that could hold their own already, they may have actually had a chance to develop and progress toward the level we were at. Even the Jan signings McIntyre made weren't all bad but it felt like everyone was just passing through a bit of a mess.

The strategy around McPake in the window looked like it was in reaction to that and went extreme the other way, focusing on guys in Scotland and old team mates who were seen as lower risk.

Ideally, we would maybe find someone mid career and pursue a strategy somewhere in between both.

I disagree quite strongly that fans expectations on the new manager are unreasonable and off putting. When guys like Petrie, Murray or Hartley have been mentioned, the overwhelming response has been relatively constructive. It just feels like the board have quite hopeful thinking to heavily invest in someone who promises the world rather than someone a bit more seasoned and pragmatic.

I think Nelms a thing about wanting Ex Dees managing the team, obviously Brown, McCann and McPake were given the job, he was willing to give Billy Dodds (who has built a competitive Inverness team and took them to the play off final)  an assistant manager’s job, there’s also Dave Mackay, Scott Robertson  on the back room staff, that’s without mentioning WGS.

Our first port of call when the job is up for grabs is self proclaimed Dee, Jack Ross, then we’re linked with another ex player in Kevin Thomson.

I’m hoping that when Mourinho was at Largs, he told Craig Brown that Dundee were his Scottish team…..but can he do it on a Wednesday night in Greenock?

Of all the names recently mentioned the only one I couldn’t get behind and support is Steven Pressley, that’s one too far for me.

In that first season we were a proper striker/finisher away from a really decent side. I’m sure we always performed well in the xG stats where we were creating plenty chances and just not taking them. With a proper structure and recruitment team in place I think he’d have gone on to do well. Was apparently a very good coach.
