Worst Dundee Manager ever?

Recommended Posts

The recent passing of Dave Smith made me think about who is the worst Dundee manager ever (or at least in my time as a Dee). I used to think until fairly recently that Dave Smith was up there but perhaps we had been spoilt with Scott, Knox and McKay who preceded him. He was eccentric, did some daft things like applauding the Arabs and speaking to the fans on the pitch but he had some decent results and doesn't come close to some of the more recent muppets; namely Kernaghan, McIntyre, McGhee.

So who is the worst Dundee manager in my time? Last night's debacle reminded me how much I hate McIntyre, how he ripped the soul out of the club and made Dens Park a toxic place to be. He decimated the side he inherited and actually brought in players who were worse. He had plenty of time to save us from relegation but we went down with a whimper. Despite the McGhee shambles., Jim McIntryre for me is the worst Dundee manager of all time.

It's tragic that so many of the candidates for this are come from the last 15 or so years

Kerno made me start to miss games after decades of loyalty.....Mcintyre was a poor appointment!! As was McCann and certainly McPake!!

Were McCann and McPake worse than McIntrye, McGhee or Kernaghan? McPake got us promotion while I enjoyed McCann pumping the Arabs out the League Cup. Can think of any really enjoyable moments under McIntrye or McGhee

I know I’m in the very minority here, but I wouldn’t say Mark McGhee was that bad a manager for us. A bit like Bomber, he was just not accepted at the onset and consequently got the Nickleback treatment on social media. I’d wager that if McGhee (or even McIntyre for that matter) was the manager from the beginning of June, we wouldn’t sitting fifth in the league with a game played more than our league rivals.

Anyway….back to topic, it’s a close call between Kerno, McCann and McPake. Seen a lot of pish played at Dens over the years, but the dross dished out by these managers was too regularly horrific. Worryingly, Bowyer is on track to be a future competitor!

When McIntyre took over I actually think we looked a bit better for first couple of games. I remember his first few games in charge and thinking we looked more organised and was reasonably hopeful. However that all went to sh1t pretty quickly!

Interesting shout for Bonetti. Never really thought of it in that way but he is probably our most underperforming manager given the resources and player quality. Can’t give it to him though because of the good times even though it didn’t end well.

The question should've been when was the last time we had a decent manager apart from early Hartley era the vast majority of all been shit

Just one shit appointment after another

When is the last time we of a certain age were truly happy

Me being 47 it has to be Duffy and the cup final and Europe all pretty downhill since then ....
